Some Help Needed

Some Help Needed

2000-12-20 by dacook@dera.gov.uk

Hi,

I don't own an AN1X myself, but I do own 2/5 of one!

Or put another way, I own a Yamaha EX5, which has the AN modelling
within its sonic armoury.

As the EX5 is now discontinued by Yamaha, several member sof the EX
community (myself included) are looking at ways of keeping support
for this synth going.

One area I am considering (it's crazy Yamaha never supported it) is
to provide converter utilities to allow the EX to read the patches of
the synths it is derived from, viz: A3000, VL30, CS series, and AN1X.

As I also program for a hobby, I can combine two interests and the
result will benefit a lot of people.

To start off, I am looking at starting on an AN1X to EX patch
converter in the new year (once I've finished some other projects)
and I am looking for a friendly AN1X owner who may be able to help me
out.

The sort of help I would be looking for is for somebody to either
create or take a patch, note down all the parameter settings and then
send this to me along with the actual file containing the bank. This
would allow me to dissect the AN1X voice and come up with a mapping
to the EX voice structure.

If you would be interested and willing to help, the please emial me
at dacook@....

Ah, make that one fifth. The EX5 has two AN voices (either layered
or duophonic), the AN1x has ten.

VL30? I suppose you mean VL70m...

As for the AWM2 engine, it has little to do with the synthesis
engine of the A3000. I don't know any other AWM2 synth personally,
but I would think the W5 and W7 would be roughly similar. Then
again, they depend on the internal waveforms.

And, Yamaha are a bunch of wankers that they never supported the
EX5 properly.

How about someone who owns both a silver EX5 and an AN1x? :)

The .an1 format of the AN1xEdit program is described somewhere,
but I can't seem to find it on the internet anymore. Then again,
the program's author, Gary Gregson, is a member of this list and
perhaps he might be able to help you out.

As for the voice structure, the AN modelling in the EX5 is 100%
identical to that in the AN1x; you may have noticed that an AN
voice has a different filter than an AWM2 voice.

The difference between the two instruments are the effects (well,
can't beat the EX5 here) and the polyphonic arpeggiator/sequencer
of the EX5, and the AN1x goodies that the EX5 doesn't have, like
unison mode, split and dual mode, and FreeEG.

Perhaps you should shownload the Data List for the AN1x. It can be
found somewhere on the Yamaha UK server (www.yamaha.co.uk).

As long as you use monophonic voices (like 'EarthLead', which is
a preset on both), you should be OK. As for trings and pads...
well, you have an EX5 for that, don't you? :)

If you need any help, just holler.

The simplest thing to do would be to download the AN1x data manual form the
Yamaha on line library. Then take a look at how (and which) parameters map
between the AN1x and EX5.

If you need a copy of the An1xEdit .an1 file format I can supply the file
format source code (its also available on the Yamaha UK web site at the An1x
page:
http://www.xgfactory.com/HTML/down/an1xed_1.htm)

Gary, many thanks for your reply. I had a look at that site, but
couldn't find anything describing the file format.

If you have such a document, I would be most grateful if you could
email it to me at dacook@....

Many thanks.
