Horrendous rasping noise

Horrendous rasping noise

2000-12-12 by Jerry A

Fellas:

This morning I turned my An1x on and started going through some
patches. I hit upon one which had both scenes turned on (so you could
morph between them). There was a loud intermittent rasping noise, the
kind you get when your speaker connection is hitting and missing. So
I thought maybe I had tweaked the patch into some weirdness(sounded
like a S&H LFO modulating the osc sync) and went to something else,
but every patch that had both scenes on had this. The sound is loud
enough that the synth sounds soft by comparison.

Has anybody run into this? Any advice about how to cure it (short of
sending it to synth hospital)? What are the options for a synth
hospital other than yamaha?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Ok, I fixed it. Fatory initialize didn't help, so I went into test
mode (O-+ depressed during power-on). That seems to have done the
trick.

Still, it's a pretty scary thing to have happen. Anyone got any
insight on why it happens?

Cheers,

Jerry

There are a few bugs in the AN1x that only surface after a long
period. I've noticed that the right channel goes off, crackling,
after the unit has been turned on for some time.

At one point, my AN1x became virtually unusable. I had to reset
it to factory defaults, which solved the problem. So, if all else
fails, save your patches and reset the AN1x.

?!?! 24 months since I purchased my AN1x and I've never heard this
happen - good for me, bad for you :-(

I wonder if it could be related to the now infamous "popping &
clicking" bug in the audio outputs? I had this repaired by Yamaha
about three - four months after I bought my AN1x. Are you the original
owner or did you buy it 2nd hand - maybe your warranty is till good?

Hi,

As far as I know, or at least this's how the warranty works here:
if you're the first owner you'll get a full year warranty, BUT, when this
first owner sells the gear, the warranty become useless to anyone (at the
very same time), coz, only the person, who has his name on the original
receipt can ask for this service (but all I can say is that this procedure
is illegal here in Brazil...:-)

Cheers,
PinheadX.

I have a b-stock machine with a full warranty. However, I don't know
if I can send it in to have work done, since I haven't been able to
re-create the problem.

Jon, I did wonder if this was the infamous popping noise. Wasn't
there an OS version no. associated with this problem? I have v1.02,
which I thought was the fix for the problem.

Cheers,

Jerry

No, it was not software related - it was a hardware fix. The details
of my experience are posted on my web site http://www.jdlx-
musique.com/ The OS update addressed a seperate issue with a popping
sound in the delay effect when synchronized to MIDI Clock.

My AN1x has ver 1.02 of the bios and it still makes popping noises when
cold. I spoke to a Technician from Yamaha Australia about this issue and
it seems to be a design fault. He mentioned that he had to re-route the
grounding from one of the boards internally . Newer versions have been
modified and don't suffer from this problem. I find that this problem only
occurs on cold days ,after a few minutes of warming up the popping noises
disappear.

Well I had this once....and my simple solution: avoid your AN-1x from cold
places....really I mean it. When I removed it from my "music barn" to the
living room and let it warm up. My AN-1x didn't have problems anymore....

This was known from the moment it was released. My AN1x does it too. Just
switch it on some minutes (with amps down) before using it ;-)
