Hi there, I'm looking for some good ferry corsten / gouryella a-like lead sounds..A bit like the well known 'custard' but sharper and with more detuning.. Since i'm not really good with programming the an1x I was hoping some of you could share some good patches. Thanks in advance, Mart

I'm sorry but, could someone please explain who - or what - is "ferry corsten"?!? I've seen this reference on a few user groups and have no point of reference... regards, Jon --- In AN1x-list@egroups.com, "Mart Vanes" <mart@g...> wrote:

Hi Phil! It would be greatly appreciated if you would share with the list how to make that Binary Finary-arpeggiator sequence. (It's a lovable(!) piece of music). That is, if it's not too much trouble for you...? :-) Regards, Bjorn Standal

Hi Jon,
Ferry Corsten's a DJ/producer of the modern UK trance sound. I say 'modern'
because trance has been around far longer than 2 years - despite what some
magazines seem to have us believe <hehehe>. Someone else may be able to
name a few other similar sounding artists, but I guess a similar style would
be Paul van Dyke's remix of Binary Finary's hit "1998". (Which by the way, I
worked out on the AN1x using the arpeggiator. Post back if anyone wants the
details. It sends tingles up your spine when hear it played by yourself!).
Hope that helps. Oh and if I don't get to chat to you beforehand, all the
best in the New Year.
Phil
Anyway, we *all* know that 'trance' is out this year and 'hard house' is in.
<yes, this statement was provided for fun - no need for comment, anyone> ;-)

Hi Bjorn I thought you might like it!!! Ok, here we go... First pick a patch. That's your job but remember: Short attack/release, try adding a slow filter sweep (using Fmod Depth) with a sine LFO wave with it's speed turned down low. Any newbies not sure of any of this, just post. That's what the list's for! The Arp: Very simple! It's the first one: Arp01 UpOct1 (plus activate the "Hold" function) And the magical chord progression is: N.B. Each line represents a chord (group of notes) to be held down together. The letter = the note. The number = the octave. (I hope you all know the song well so as to time the chord changes correctly!) Here we go... Hold down: C1 C2 C3 Hold down: D1 D2 F3 Hold down: D#1 D#2 G3 Hold down: F1 F2 A3 Hold down: G1 G2 Bb3 ...and then toggle between Bb3 and D3 for the final part whilst still holding down G1 and G2. This part's quite tricky as you have to time the changes just prior to the upper note playing. ....and now start the sequence again, but this time continue on an octave higher up the keyboard. Once you get it, it'll instantly create tingles up the back of you spine! It's so simple - yet so brilliant!!! Also, the section that plays before the mighty main melody riff is simply: Hold down: C1 C2 C3 Hold down: C1 C2 Bb2 Hold down: C1 C2 G2 Please post back and let me know how you get on! Cheers, Phil

Struggle through it as best you, make use of a software sequencer (cakewalk ect) to record your progression. Then you can adjust the notes and timing as you like. Good luck. PS i'm picking up my AN1X in five days !!!!! Pretty _ucking excited about it too. Gerry

Hi Phil Thanks a lot! I'll try it out as soon as I can make the time. (I'm a "dead beat" :-) after work these days...) Regards, Bjorn

Hi there again. Couldn't wait that long to try it out: It's superb, Phil. And I've tried with many different patches, and found out it can go with just about anything that is a little bit snappy, e.g. short attack/decay, as you mentioned. Generally add some delay and twist cutoff / resonance to find something to your own taste. It's also cool use a patch like a distorted 303 (e.g.Fuzzline2) and use the VCF cutoff to sweep in and out as the sequence plays. Awesome stuff! Hi Bjorn, Now, aren't you kicking kicking yourself that you didn't think of it first! Incidently, from interviews of Binary Finary I've read, they were messed around by their first label manager who 'bought' the rights to the track as part of their original contract and then proceeded to make a heap of money through the re-releases and remixes that followed, locking Binary Finary out of the whole deal. Very sad, actually. I wonder if Binary Finary are legally able to even play their own track live still. Maybe not??? Anyway, as another variation. Try a rich string pad, overdrive it, and play the sequence as chords, rather than arpeggiatored notes. This recreates the breakdown in the middle of the 1998 '2000 remix'. Drop a few overly reverbed kicks, add a 909 snare roll.... etc. etc. etc. !!!! Have fun, Phil
