ello..

2000-12-04 by Zyguli aka Fragile

Ello...
i'm new here so i wanted to say ello...
i've got an1x for a year n a half now and using it for dnb basses, pads,
fx... everything...

And here comes the forst question (or suggestionrather) about an1x
editor... has anyone already thought bout making any plugin or smth for it,
that would check sounds parameters with same names and delete duplicates ?
I've got many banks with the same names, and saometimes they are the same ,
sometimes modified sounds... it's hard for me to analise every single sound
in them...

The author of AN1xEdit, Gary Gregson, is on this list as well, so I'll
choose my words carefully. :)

AN1xEdit basically copies the interface of the AN1x (and it adds a few handy
gadgets). So you have all the controls, and room for 128 patches in a set.
And even though I have 64 Mb of memory and some 10 Gb free disk space, I
always have to work with those 128 voices.

The reason for all this, if I understand correctly, that Yamaha asked him to
produce just that, and paid him for it. Now, a good rule of thumb for any
programmer who actually wants to make a living, is that you don't add any
features that no-one asked for. So AN1xExit is a very handy editor, but it's
not much of a librarian.

So if any changes would be made to AN1xEdit, Gary would have to do it in his
valuable free time, and I think Yamaha would have to give their consent as
well, although I'm not sure on that one.

What I was wondering myself, is whether the VST standard offers the option
of MIDI-only plug-ins. In that case, you could put a synth editor in your
VST application. Perhaps I should suggest it to Steinberg...

You might want to spend some time with the demo version of SoundDiver
from Emagic. Sound Diver is the only 'commercial' app, i.e., not
freeware - cost money, that I know of which supports Ed/Lib functions
for the AN1x. I'm uncertain whether it offers the 'compare' function
that you describe.

If memory serves, a similar function was provided in Galaxy Librarians
from Opcode Systems. However, Galaxy was discontinued before Opcode
provided an AN1x module - and then Gibson discontinued Opcode. Sigh.

There is an Autolink feature between Logic Audio and SoundDiver which
may accomplish some of what Peter mentions - subscribing to patch names
in SD from Logic, perhaps even involing edit mode, etc. I've not spent
enough time with it to honestly say. This also is similar to how Galaxy
& Vision worked. I'm unaware of any app or VST plug-in that performs a
similar function for Steinberg apps (Cubase.)

The thing with VST is that it's very platform-independant. You would only
have to re-compile your code and you can run it on Windows, MacOS, BeOS,
Linux, whatever, and also in the VST application of your choice.. Also, you
don't have to worry about MIDI issues and you can even have the VST host
draw your user interface.

VST instruments and filters are relatively easy and fast to implement. So,
making a MIDI-only plug-in, for instance a synth editor, would only seem
logical to me.

Hey Gary, how about a VST AN1xEdit? :)

My dream is to build a dedicated VST box one day, without things like
Windows getting in the way. Just VST and a very light host OS.

Hey Gary, how about a VST AN1xEdit? :)

VST plugin format does not provide sufficient features for a MIDI only synth
editor.

However Yamaha in association with some other sequencer/hardware vendors
will shortly be releasing a new 'Open MIDI Plugin System' format, that is
specifically designed for creating MIDI editors/effects and softsynths.

I will be supporting this new system in future editors.
