Xavier,
Please send the copy of the file you are attempting to load to me. I will
take a look at it and see if I can see why its causing An1xEdit problems.
Regards
Gary

X - FWIW, I'm using a Mac. Still, it shouldn't make a difference. I've no problem reports from any of my *own* patches so I don't know why this 'Ophone' bank is still giving you trouble. It worked for me... Has anybody else had a problem? Gary - here's the link to the original file from sophalicus@... http://www.egroups.com/files/AN1x- list/AN1xPatches/patch+me+ophone/Ophone.zip and the link to the *copy* I reposted for X to try since he had a problem with the original and I didn't: http://www.egroups.com/files/AN1x- list/AN1xPatches/jdlxmusique/ophone_copy.zip regards, Jon --- In AN1x-list@egroups.com, "Gary Gregson" <gary@y...> wrote: > Xavier, > > Please send the copy of the file you are attempting to load to me. Hi Jon,
I checked out the file...and it does indeed kill the PC version of AN1xEdit.
I traced the problem to a small bug in AN1xEdit PC. Basically if your
comments are greater than 255 characters then the text strings do not get
terminated problem. Thereafter on re-load you get a memory fault :-(
This doesn't occur on the Mac version due to the different way strings are
handled on the Mac.
Hence I guess Jon created the file on the Mac and went a little over
enthusiastic with his voice comment descriptions :-)
For those PC users who want to try the voices, I have fixed the file and
re-upload to Jons' section of the file area as ophone2.zip.
I guess I ought to put together a patched version of AN1xEdit PC to cure the
problem....but I am a little busy at the moment :-( SO until I do ....please
keep your voice and sequence comments to below 255 characters.
Regards
Gary

All I did was download the file, comment on the uniqueness of the voices, and repost the file as a favor when Xavier reported the problem. These are not my Voices. I'll reload them to the ophone folder if the proper owner does not... > > For those PC users who want to try the voices, I have fixed the file and > re-upload to Jons' section of the file area as ophone2.zip. > > I guess I ought to put together a patched version of AN1xEdit PC to cure the > problem....but I am a little busy at the moment :-( SO until I do ....please > keep your voice and sequence comments to below 255 characters. Wow. Thanks for the terrific follow up (as always) Gary. Good of you to spend time on this. It's a pretty rare phenomena to have so_many comments in a file. Considering how long AN1xEdit has been in use I don't think too many users have been affected by such a minor bug. Now we know if there's a next time. Hello
I am running the An1x-edit from a PC, and I am having no problems with
the "ophone"-patch. It didn't crash and my An1x recieved the patches without
problem, so how can it be a bug in the An1x-edit????.

The nature of the problem means its very dependent on what data is already
in the PC memory space. IF there are plenty of zeros where the comment
strings get loaded, then the unterminated string sizes will remain small
(i.e. existing zeros in memory will act as terminators). However if there
are no zeros, the strings don't get terminated and appear to be huge. This
in turn crashes the app when it tries to manipulate them. Since there is no
way of knowing what's already in memory or where the app gets loaded
to...the whole situation is indeterminate. It may work fine in some
cases....or cause a total system crash in others.
Basically its just a bad bit of programming on my part....but unfortunately
one of those programming errors that's hard to spot if you don't see the
mistake immediately. Furthermore, since not many people actually write huge
comments into their AN1 library files....its not the kind of thing that will
immediately start to generate end user bug reports ;-(

It took me a week and you really don't want to know what else in matters of installing and re-installing. But luckily, I managed to save all my data. And, incidently, I now have a CD-Rewriter (Plextor 8/4/32A). The thing writes twice as fast as my old CD-ROM reads... - Peter
