AN1x vs. Access b

AN1x vs. Access b

2000-04-07 by jondl

I got to check out an Access b today for the first time. Very nice
sounding. Unfortunately, the OS was whacked out and none of the front
panel controls were working?! Aaargh! All I could do was select presets
:-( Neither me nor two sales people (one of whom I know from many
years) could get the knobs to affect any change.

Not that I'm going to buy one any time soon but I was wondering if my
first impression was in-line with others. To my ears, the Access
sounded more like a Nord - only better - than an AN1x. The AN1x sounds
warmer to me but not as bright (maybe "crisp" is the word I'm looking
for?) Maybe its just the difference between the DAC's...

Anybody else heard one / own one?

Regards,
Jon

I have a Nord (first version) and an AN1-x. They both sound great- I have'nt
played the Access - but the I have played the Virus- . I thought the Virus
felt kind of 'cheap'- the knobs/buttons etc.
I'm hopeful for Access to improve.

the access virus was demonstrated to me some time ago. the guy in the music
store really got this synth going. it is by far the most fattest synth i
ever heard. i have no words. okay i did not hear that many synths in my
life. haven't had the chance to compare it directly to the nord as they did
not have it in the store at that time. have to agree that for my
applications i decided to go for the an1x. as it offers me enough
possibilities. and price wise the an1x was favorable. unfortunately my an1x
is already 6 weeks in repair as there was some kind of problem with the
knobs. i hope they get it fixed at yamaha.

Er, the AN1x doesn't have any submenus.

Tuesday or Wednesday, my (silver) EX5 should arrive. Now *that's* a
synthesiser with a lot of menu's. Six part envelope generators, faster or
slower slopes according to velocity, stuff like that. 'Complex' is a bit of
a eufemism.

The AN1x is beautiful in its simplicity: just press a button and turn a
knob, or turn a knob and press a button. Compare that with a DX7...

How about the Supernova II keyboard? I've been thinking of getting the Pro X
(48 voices) when I have the money. Which could take *quite* a while, I might
ad..

Funny you should mention the Behringer stuff. A local store has the
Modulizer and Virtualizer for about $120 each. I went to the web page, was
impressed, and ran off to get a Modulizer on Saturday. This unit has a lot
going for it -- fat filter, resonator, 3D effects, etc. As I was paying for
it, I asked about its reverbs. (The stupids did not have one set up to
demo.) It has NO reverbs! Ok, fine, I say, give me the Virtualizer (more
of a standard reverb unit). Cracked the manual and looked up MIDI
implementation. IT DOES NOT RECOGNIZE VELOCITY OR AFTERTOUCH! What does it
recognize? Only controllers 20 - 30, and even these have limited real-time
effectiveness on the signal processing. Boom - back in the box, back to the
store. I'm picking up a good old Quadraverb +, which although doesn't quite
shine, you can control many features with any continuos controller you want,
including aftertouch, pitch bend, velocity, even note #.
