New to AN1X

2016-08-12 by nelsarts@...

Hello, I recently purchased a AN1X, and am hoping I can learn some of the important things.  First of all, it is an amazing instrument, and mostly seems to be going strong for a 19 year old machine.  I have two questions to start: 1) I have noticed that the control matrix buttons aspect of programming seems odd, complicated and limited.  The seller did give me a CD with the PC editor, but I don't currently have a capable computer.  If I have my facts straight, only a Windows computer will work with the AN1X editor?  Would you say the PC editor gives you more ease and flexibility?  Does it make it worth buying a PC over a Mac? 2) In getting to know the board, I've noticed that when I touch the ribbon strip, whatever it is affecting stays stuck, and won't stop until I change to a different program. Any thoughts, advice, experience would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I think many folks on this forum are actually using it on mac with emulation software like vines/parallel.
This software is indeed much more convenient to edit the matrix as well as the real time envelopes.

Cheers,

The ribbon is supposed to stay in the position where you lift you finger, or what you use.

But mine jumps down to zero.

This is a quirk of the OS, and there IS a way to choose which behaviour you want. I dug this out of my archive of notes... See the bold.

"Not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but if you make a new patch and save it then assign a parameter to the X-axis of the ribbon it glitches. What I mean by this is, normally if you press the ribbon down and let go it will hold where you left off. If you switch to a factory patch where the ribbon X-axis is set to reset once letting go, then go back to your patch the X-axis now resets. The only way to get it to work properly again is to switch to another factory patch where the X-axis is set to hold, or turn the AN1x off and on again. Discovered this yesterday when I was trying to set up the X-axis to reset. Also if you switch from your patch with X-axis hold to another of your patches with X-axis reset and back to the first, the X-axis will still be set to hold on that first patch. If you still have all the original patches, or have replaced all of them you won't have this problem. Mine is OS 1.03, if that means anything. Just found it peculiar, and slightly bothersome to my OCD..."

I can't remember testing this much so I don't know whether it's 100% accurate or whether only factory patches can 'fix' the mode... that's a bit confusingly worded... but I'm sure by testing you'll figure out the exact details. Maybe it's not that bad.
