Replacing AN1x potentiometers with better ones?

Replacing AN1x potentiometers with better ones?

2016-05-28 by Matt Gregory

Has anyone here ever replaced the pots on the AN1x with higher quality
ones to get rid of some of the stair-stepping effect that happens
while you're editing? I was comparing my AN1x with a Roland GAIA and
the GAIA knobs are so much smoother sounding and better feeling. And I
was noticing that the AN1x knobs are capable of hitting every value in
the sweep, but you really have to go slow and be careful, otherwise it
will skip a lot. I think higher quality pots would help tremendously
and it would be a cool little upgrade for the AN1x.

Hello !

the "stair stepping effect" can be more likely the result of the analog - digital conversion (8 bits = 0 to 255) than "scratchy" pots... First try to clean them with some electronics contact cleaner.

Cheers.

Bear in mind that the AN1x quite likely only transmits 8 bits of data
for the pots, which gives you 256 discrete values. These can easily be
heard. On the other hand, it understands more resolution via MIDI
(probably 16 bits or 16536 values) which sounds much smoother. No idea
if this is the case with the Gaia, but it could be.

By pressing Down in The pots the respond in smaller increments.

I'd risk a statement, that it has much more to do with the way the software reacts to the knob movements...

And to make it clear: by "software" I mean the operating system of AN1x and Gaia.

Hey J.F.,

That's a good idea, I'll try that.

Thanks,
Matt

Well even if it could receive a wider range of values, most of the parameters only have 7 bits, so there are only 128 different values.  But I really think my biggest problem is that my pots are being insensitive.  They could be sticking from being dirty, but they've had this problem for as long as I can remember.  I'm going to try cleaning them and see how that goes.  I'll keep you guys posted.

you can press the knob in while turning and it will go slower
