AN200 has secret alternate sequencer play modes :-0

2016-02-10 by mpsfmpsfmpsf@...

Okay long shot here as this thing is quite old and doesn't have much of a dedicated fan-base (apart from here that is!)

I've been scrawling through the MIDI parameters making the most of this machine by arming myself with a bunch of external faders controlling a whole heap of hidden functions in the AN200. It's incredible. Really opens up the possibilty of this thing.

ANYWAY, during my investigations through the countless sysex parameters in the back, I noticed that on page 133 it says the following:

MIDI Parameter Change table ( SYSTEM )

Address Size Data Prameter Name Description Default

(H) (H) (H) (H)

00 00 00 4 (RESERVED) --

04 1 (RESERVED) --

05 (NOT USED) --

06 1 (RESERVED) --

07 2 01...C8 Play Effect Gate Time 1%(1)...200%(C8) 64(100%)

09 1 00...03 Step Seq Loop Type forward(0),backward(1),alternateA(2), 00(forward)

alternateB(3)

TOTAL SIZE 09

NOW surely this means there is a way to get the sequencer to play in modes other than Forward and Reverse which is only possible via the front panel controls.

Has anyone ever managed to get this to work or tried to? I've spent ages trying to work out the sysex for this on my Kenton Control Freak and doesn't work!!! So frustrating! Would love these extra modes - it would be amazing to get the standard 16-step sequenced to be effectively doubled by having it play 'Ping Pong' for example.

:))))))))

damn this is absolutely interesting!
i tried sysex once on my roland mc909 with a bcr2000
don't know how to start this on the mighty an200...
anyway good find!!

Wow, cool that you got sysex to work on the MC909 - I have a MC505 I've tried to program sysex for but Roland MIDI structure is a bit more difficult! I was able to configure sysex commands for the AN200 easily!

Do you have any examples of which parameters on the MC909 you controlled via sysex?

Yeah REALLY wanna figure out this sequencer trick for the AN200 though. Would be a dream.

sorry to tell you but the other parameteres *is* accessible from front panel (but not like in real time)   look page 91 in the manual

On the mc909 I was able to changing patch of a part without selecting that part, I used some sysex editors to do that on the brc2000.
It could be great to make this seq thing working on he an200 I will see what I could with it. If you have some sysex files of it to share go ahead , like that I will have yet something to start with

Sorry to tell you that is not what I mean. Of course I've read the manual, and I know how to access all the front panel controls using the Data knob. That's easy.

I'm talking about hidden parameter controls. I've added over 45 extra synth/global controls to my AN200 that aren't listed in the manual, these were all found by digging deep into the back of the manual and working out the sysex.

If you know how to make the sequencer play in modes other than Forward and Rev, then I'd love to know.

Ok
hope that the brc2000 can do that. I have an account also on that group, I will ask them if needed, who knows

Yes - wish it was that easy. But this was one of the first things I tried. Unfortunately the alternate play modes aren't available on the editor.

It's in there deep in the back of the manual, so it must be a function right? One possibility is that this just didn't get implemented in the latest firmware and was left out? :(((

i have to rewrite the code, dont know if it s very different from writing it form roland mc909, i mean, apart the label string, ther shouldnt be other differences, right?

Writing the code won't be difficult! The strings are quite simple for AN200, kinda.

If you look at page 133 of manual, under <2-2> you'll see:

MIDI Parameter Change table ( SYSTEM )

and then it says:

Step Seq Loop Type forward(0),backward(1),alternateA(2),alternateB(3)

Which has to mean the sequencer can be played in those modes?!! Surely? It doesn't make sense for it to be for anything else on the synthesizer.

The code I've tried to program is: F0 43 10 6D 0 0 9 XX F7 (XX = data from knob/slider)

Let me know what you think?

Yes that is cool!
I will try that this evening it doesnt seems so difficult

Man for now I have tried to send sysex from the an200 to midiOx but nothing happens. I also tried to make my brc2000 learn an200 buttonso or knobs but without success. Tht's strange. Have you any suggestions about midi parameters on the an200 to change in order to do thinggs well? However I will try this again.

I thought you knew how to write sysex strings? 'Learn' for BCR doesn't work as AN200 doesn't send MIDI/sysex parameter changes out.. but for the AN200 they are simple anyway..

For example: VCO1 Pitch Fine is F0 43 10 5C 10 10 19 XX F7

That works fine, but it's the damn sequencer loop type I want to figure out!

There must be somebody out there that has worked it out?????????

Man I was able to dump patterns andcsongs written in sysex from an200 to midiox but no way to send any sysex from knobs/buttons...plus I thinkbmy brc2000 has some trobles 'cause I cannot senf any sysex to it. I'll ask tobyahoo group of it. Anyway, could you send me some an200 sysex strings by wich you succeded? Who knows...
thanks

Man for some reasons my bcr2000 seems broken or al least to be revised, so for now I cannot control the an200 via sysex.
anyway, looking at your first example about the step sequencer (f0 43 10 6d 0 0 9 xx f7) , I made a comparison with roland sysex and then check the an200 manual and I noticed a mistake in the address. You wrote that "0 0 9" wich seems incomplete. Plus , at least on roland sysex it has to be considered also a check sum, dont know if this is valuable also for yamaha. Anyway I think that you should try that one: f0 43 10 6d 00 00 09 xx -maybe check sum- f7.....(check sum is given by the address + xx then divide for 128, so rewrite that result in hexadecimal...but, I repeat, I dont know if this is necessary for yamaha gear...)
Let me know if this is working
cheers

Hi I already gave you an example

VCO1 Pitch Fine is F0 43 10 5C 10 10 19 XX F7

But the AN200 doesn't send knob sysex out.

Hey man,

Thanks for looking into this. Hmmm interesting. I don't think Yamaha's need checksum. Or at least the AN200 doesn't need it because I'm already controlling a load of sysex parameters for it! And I don't need checksum.

Maybe the system edit (which is the sequencer play type) needs a checksum. Hmm will try and see if this is the case!

Want it to work so much!!!!

Re: AN200 has secret alternate sequencer play modes :-0

2016-02-25 by mpsfmpsfmpsf@...

Damn it - checksum doensn't work.

At the moment when I program F0 43 10 6D 0 0 9 XX F7 I'm at least able to switch from Forwards to Reverse via a fader but that's boring and there's already a button for that on the AN200!

So yeah. Confused. Not sure if it's to do with checksum. But I actually am using a Kenton Control Freak to program this and that has a automatic checksum calculator which I placed before F7 but tbh I can't guarantee if it worked properly. Hmmm.

Thats already cool that you cna do forward and reverse via sysex indeed! Those 2 alternate a and b ways intriguing me, I ask myself if thay ar similar to thebcool free eg play function or someting like that
