new virtual analog

new virtual analog

2014-12-18 by jim.alciere@...

This might be obvious to others, but why do the virtual analog keyboards nowadays only have 25-37 keys?  I suppose I could get a Virus T 12. They're only $3,000.00.

Thanks

Jim

- Because it's cheaper to make -> cheaper to sell -> more sales
- More portable
In short: the synth buying market has changed since the 90s, and expensive hardware is a big risk for the companies.

Well...

Nord 2x (4 octave)
Waldorf Blofeld Keyboard (4 octave)
Studiologic Sledge (5 octave)
- all current models I think

Or get a Blofeld desktop and a MIDI keyboard (AN1x makes a decent controller!)

All £500-1000

Not sure why smaller keyboards are so popular though - maybe they are seen as second keyboards for those who already have workstations?

Regards, Bill

Hi Jim !

not because it's cheaper or more "woman friendly", but because these instruments are techno - D.J. oriented. I guess you don't need 5 octaves to run a boomy bass line and throw in some robotic sequences... Cheap but with a "normal" keyboard, here is the Studiologic Sledge, with 3 oscillator and a flashy yellow color. Not bad at all for the price and i suppose they've corrected the few bugs of the first ones.

Cheers.

Woman friendly? What has gender to do with keyboard size?
And yes, price is definitely a reason. Do you really think many people are waiting for a 500+ €/$ (VA) synth?
That they're EDM / D.J. (techno, really? Are you posting this from the 90s?) is only partly the reason. If that was only the case, then they'd go for a desktop module only, or just a plugin.
The Studiologic Sledge has a nice hands-on interface, but a rather limited VA engine. My recommendation, if you like programming your own sounds, and can live with less knobs, is a second hand Korg Z1, Korg MS2000 (nice interface, but limited polyphony), or a Supernova II (still not that cheap, but way cheaper than when it was new).
One of the reasons the Virus TI2 kb is still so expensive, is because it's so much more than just a VA.

Was thinking the same thing about the SLEDGE (BTW, what 'bugs' did the early ones have?)

Thanks--I figured it had to be obvious. I think in term of a live synth. With plugins, people can get a whole army of synths for what one VA costs.Given our current economic climate and the possibility that a keyboard could become obsolete overnight, it makes sense to keep the costs down.,

I'm sure it won't be long before we just buy a keyboard with the feel and knobs we like, then just plug in a thumb drive for any sound one can imagine.

Well Jim,
I'm glad you said that.
Roland makes the system1 which is exactly that. It's a pretty solid VA with the ability to load "plug-out" synths into the physical keyboard. Unfortunately it's more steps than I'm interested in to achieve such a thing. The key bed is crap and there isn't much of an indicator to let you know which position the knobs are in unless it's connected to a computer. And it only holds 8 patches.
I thought I'd let you know your wishes are slowly coming true.

Woman friendly? What has gender to do with keyboard size?

In other words "woman acceptance factor"... try to stack half a dozen full sized keyboards with wires running everywhere in your room and wait for your wife's reaction. Unless she's musician too...

Supernova II is a good choice. But i still have my AN1x and a Red Sound Elevata (quite "collector", full of knobs and sounding completely different).

Cheers.

If i  remember well the test of one of the first Studiologic synths, they said that sometimes notes can "freeze" with complex patches and maximum polyphony. The "sound engine" being made by Waldorf i guess that the OS was not completely tested and debugged at this time...

Cheers.
