Hi all: is it possible to insert a PLG150-DX into a AN200?

Hi all: is it possible to insert a PLG150-DX into a AN200?

2012-06-08 by cristoforcolombo

Hi all, I'm new here - thank you for your archive and tips - and even if I made a quick search around I didn't find anything about this question: since An200 and Dx200 share the same parts (apart from plugins) do you think is possible to insert a PLG150-DX into a AN200 and or viceversa? Does anyone know for sure if this is going to work ornot?
cheers
Lucio

Hi Lucio

AN200 owner here. That's an interesting question, and I don't know the
answer for sure. However, I checked out screenshots of the AN200 and
DX200 side-by-side. The knobs and buttons make them look like identical
twins, apart from the VCO sections:

AN200
VCO1: wave select button with 5 leds - saw, pulse, mix, vari, mlt saw
DX200
Algorithm button (no leds, but the 32 possible algorithms must be shown
on the data display of a DX200, don't see how an AN200 could do that)
AN200
Sync: mode button with 3 leds - off, vco1 m>s, vco2>1
DX200
Modulator: select button with 4 leds - 3, 2, 1, all

AN200
VCO2: wave button with 5 leds - saw, pulse, mix, tri, sine
DX200
Noise Osc: Type button with 5 leds - white, up ,down, pitch, vari
Other small differences: AN200 knobs VCO1/2 and Sync Pitch replaced by
Harmonic and Decay on the DX200.

So, on the hardware side, it is likely that you could fit the PLG150-DX
into the AN200, and probably get a noise out if you played midi notes
in, but you would be unlikely to be able to edit any of the parameters
above.

There is a further complication in that the PLG150-AN and PLG150-DX have
different device IDs for receiving MIDI system exclusive data (01011100
5CH and 01011100 5CH respectively). So if the AN200 hardware host
assumes it is hosting a PLG150-AN, then it will presumably send sysex
messages from its knobs and buttons for that device, not for the
PLG150-DX. You might be able to send appropriate PLG150-DX sysex
messages from an external device (eg a computer to AN2000 MIDI in
socket) which would be passed to the PLG150-DX card, but that would
rather defeat the object of putting the card in a nice knobby box like
the AN200.

If you have access to a PLG150-DX card, probably best to try hosting it
in one of the devices intened to take any of the PLG cards, eg CS6x,
CS6R, SW1000XG, MU100, MU100R, MU128, S80, Motif, maybe others?

Sorry that is not a definitive yes/no answer, and sorry it probably
isn't the answer you were looking for :-)

Bill

Typo error, the PLG150-DX device ID should have been 01100010 62H. Anyway, the important thing is that it is different to the PLG150-AN.

no one knows as no one has tried it

but i would think that theres an os eprom that controls it and has the functions of each board to control the front panel features

and also the sysex implementation

i would get yourself a cheap module that allows 2 cards

Well, thank you Bill and Jammie. I'm asking this prior to swap dx and An plg's I got. Well, I have a Motif Rack classic, also, with a Dx and Vl plg's. And I would install the Dx plg into the AN200 and the 150An into the Motif. Anyway, is there any danger int swapping cards?

Lucio
>Anyway, is there any danger int swapping cards?
Probably the biggest danger is physically damaging the cards when removing/inserting. I have read elsewhere that they can be difficult to remove due to locking tabs - not tried it myself. There is unlikely to be any danger of the boards being electrically incompatible as they will all have the same contact system.

However, if you have a functional AN200 containing a PLG150-AN, and a Motif Rack containing a PLG100-DX and VL, it's not clear what is the benefit of swapping boards around to get a non-functional (non-editable, non-saleable) AN200 with DX card, and Motif with AN and VL. What are you trying to achieve?

Bill, I forgot to mention I also have a Yamaha Fs1R so the Plg-Dx is less useful to me (when plugged into the Motif). Another plus, should be the An-plg hosted into the Motif because of the fx section and overall better editability (I hope).
