OT: Compressed files

OT: Compressed files

2012-02-10 by Greg

I notice that a user on one of my Yahoo groups just posted a file with the
extension "tar.gz". As a Linux user I know what it is, it is an archive of
files with the tar utility compressed with the gzip utility. (I also know from
personal use that bzip2 creates smaller files and can be distinguished by the
".bz2" suffix.) However I do not know if Windows XP can open this as a
compressed file. I also know that ".rar" is not supported by my Windows
zip-file-building utility WinZip. (I used Windows as it was needed by my 2
Yamaha PC sound cards, the DS-XG aka YMF724 and the SW60XG.) That is why I
always use ".zip", it is the most common archiving+compression format.

7zip is a freeware program that will open gz, tar and I think even rar files.
