AN1X Mellotron

AN1X Mellotron

2012-01-16 by richardon

Hi

Actually i completed my An1X Mellotron project and posted the results to the AN1X yahoo folder.
The sounds are tested and adjusted to the templates with an Dynacord 12/2 Keymonitor.
The file contains :

Violins+Brass (Watcher of the skies)
Violins
Flute
Flute+Strings
Male choir
Female Choir
Cello
Cello+Violins
Mandoline
Strings+Choir

I implemented unfiltered Mellotrons. Unsing the Modulation wheel you will get filtered versions
The Modulation wheel will also increase reverb, blend two sounds and do other stuff.
The Pitch bender simulates the Mellotron Tape speed.
The Ribbon X increaeses Reverb.
Mellotron is dynamically concerning Attack times. Thats easy to do with AN1X.
Some decent note off effects are programmed too.

Some Demos :

Violins+Brass (Watcher of the skies) In der Endversion doch noch etwas "entschaerft".

Cello :

Female+Strings, Male, Female (plus boys), Mandoline :
http://home.arcor.de/richardon/2012/mello2012.mp3

Strawberry Floete :
http://home.arcor.de/richardon/2011/melflute.mp3

Have fun with your new Mellotron An1X .

Ciao

Hi Richie !
"Watcher of the Skies" is outstanding, it sounds really like Tony Banks
introducing this famous song. Nice emulation !
Forza AN1x !;-)

Wow! Another great set of sounds.

Thank you so much for sharing these and to everyone out there that shares
their work. I know I very much appreciate anything that adds to my sonic
palette, so it's important to recognize a job well done.

Thank you all you contributors!
(When i get my blue meanie functioning again, I hope to have some patches
to contribute as well :) )

Re: [AN1x] AN1X Mellotron

2012-01-18 by richardon

Thank you for your positive feedback.

It was really a hard work to implement this Mellotron Sounds. But the
mellotrons are the best of
the EMU vintage package. BTW A real tipp, because you'll get the EMU X2 for
free if you buy
the EMU Midi USB Box for about 40$. Price for EMU X2 was 500$.

I decided to make some other vintage Emulations using the EMU vintage
package and yotube.
- Minimoog (perhaps Jupiter 8 too)
- Some String machines
- old CX3 organ ( already done in my an1x_v1 file. Old Cx3 was template.)

I found a trick to emulate Vintage Organ Disortion. Using a dual sound and
only overdrive for the high drawbars. Overdrive for a whole sound is to
heavy. Has anybody another solution ?

EMU contains the Solina String. I owned this but its not my favorite String
machine. I like the ARP Omni Strings most
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARP_Omni
and a look at the circuits will show, they in this machine used a more
complex and expensive BCD modulation. An unknown german group (Anyones
daughter) used Minimoog T100 and Arp Omni creating a very special, ok very
german :-) sound, Krautrock. I like this Omi Sound :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4NtWOrnL5o

Has anybody a source for wav Samples for the Arp Omni ?Another Problem is
the EMU Minimoog. Using a spectral Analyzer its easy to emulate the
fundamental SAW wave :

Feedback : 60-65
Sawtooth : Edge=110
Must be reduced for high notes : Keytrack VCOx Edge -40
And some frequencies emphased :
180 Hz : +3dB
2 kHz : +2dB
5 kHz : +6 dB

(With spectral analyzer you will also see, that alasing effect depend on the
Edge value)
(Moog square will need other parameters)

It sounds identical to the EMU moog SAW, but i have some doubts this being
the right way. A useful help would be a website showing some famous Minimoog
settings.

Best regards
richy

Mini should be tricky to emulate because it had 3 VCOs...and AN1x only
2, that is enough most of the time....

The intro of the piece is very "pink floydesque", not so "german",
despite it is a german group.;-) The rest is not bad but "classic"
instrumental pop
Think Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze.... robotic
arpeggiator, saw to sine to saw VCOs modulation, sweeping high pass
filter(s) and so on :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CgXPIkX0jA
(this one is one of my favorites in this style..)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_QXc5duq-4&feature=related
(look at the huge stacks of electronics ...now you can get quite the
same in 1 or 2 19" racks;-) ... OK the video soundtrack is not so good :-\ )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhHGIPFtD0g&feature=related
(the intro is ramping up 10'...serious things begin at 12', very long
song..)
Listen : you can hear all the analog monsters around here, modular Moog,
ARP 2600, Synthi AKS...
OK, it's a bit weird and old fashioned, i don't only like this kind of
music but for me it started synthesizer music, not used only to produce
a handful of bars of unusual tones or sci-fi noises but a complete song...

Re: [AN1x] AN1X Mellotron

Hi Jeff

> Mini should be tricky to emulate because it had 3 VCOs...and AN1x only
> 2, that is enough most of the time....

Thats no problem because dual mode can be used. In this mode AN1X has 4 OSC
and because Mini is monophonic no problems with polyphonie. And as far as I
know the third MOOG OSC was most time used as L(H)FO. Perhaps its really
the way of Wave Combinations and the way to play ist. Only good player could
efford ist. For me it was too expensive and I used Cs 15, Cs 5, Cs1 and
later Arp Odyssey .

Thank you for the videos. Tihis Mindphase String is nice. I now started to
emulate the Solina String, because i have an EMU template. I used the Free
EG as monophonic EG. I think it had two EG's.
The ARP OMNI had another Sound. Heres an youtube test. I will use it for
programming :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fPRS_Yyik4
Ok its close to the solina but Modulation is different (I own scematics of
both)
It sounds more like an Hohner String Melody II.The Hohner had variabel
Modulations.

> If it's not one it sounds very close to a Mini

I think "Anyones daughter" used only ARP OMNI, Hammomd and Minimoog on
stage.

Cheers

Wonderful job! The sounds are so soulful and inspiring. Many thanks for sharing them.

Re: [AN1x] Re: AN1X Mellotron

2012-01-24 by richardon

Hi Denis

Thank you for your positive feedback. I would like to know, how you change a sound like watcher for your taste. For example EQ parameters and Filter settings to adapt it to your audio system.
A mellotron sound is very critical. The latest version was ok for some JBL Controle one but a little bit to sharp for my Dynacord 12/2.
Therefore i incrased the Filter function of Modulation Wheel from -3 to -5. Already updated in the list.
The sounds using typical detuning with FM, Free EG and Random Scene detune. Is it to much ?
Of course if you make it all too moderate you will loose the typical mellotron sound.
BTW: I also use the Digial Delay as a comb Filter and Phase Error source.
The delay Parameters change the sound very drastical. You can adapt wih Delay level too.

Actually i finished the Solina emulation and i think i found some good Mini Moog settings. Its no problem for the AN1x to sound very fat e.g. as a minimoog. You just have to choose feedback between 50 and 80 and edge around 105-115.
BTW: What means fat ? Its the relation of the low mid and high frequency band of the signal. Of its Fourier Transformation. In a fat sound the low frequency is a little bit emphased and thats the reason, that e.g. a minimoog SAW has no straight lines but like an sine wave thats added.
I dont know any other synthesizer only An1x that can reproduce this continiously via feedback and edge parameter. Unfortunatly you cant controle it using an oszilloscope, because AN1X waves are like CS80 waves build up out of phase. So you have to use your ears or an spectral analyzer instead of your eyes. Its better to trust your ears :-)
( Like spectral analyzer they cant detect phase of overtones too)

Ok, its possible to emulate nearly any vintage or actual VA machine with AN1x. Any Nord Lead any Waldorf, anything. Absolutely no problem. And AN1X filters are great.
There is only one problem. An1x has a "malfunction" in the high frequenzie band. Especially if you increase the feedback parameter high frequenzies are damped out. Thats similar to real analog machines. Last polyphonic Synthies, also digital of the 80's had damped waveforms too.
A Jupiter 8 or Juno 60 sounds warm because its waves are damped in high frequenzies.
And An1x is even more damped. Reason seems to be tecnical. Its producing some alasing effects, ranging up to 10 or 12 kHz and damping that frequenzies. You can see it with an sperctral analyzer.
And in former tims i had always the fealing that An1x sounds too warm, too unbrilliant.
Reducing feedback to silly values is no solutioen.
Its better to make a correction with the effect section. Not optimal but it works.
Using EG, Delay Combing or even Aural Exiter. Except combing I dont like all this things very much, but you can push up the An1X frequencie range in cases he should also sound fat too.

Best regards.

Re: [AN1x] AN1X Mellotron

2012-01-29 by richardon

Hi Chris

I am also using An1X editor Version 1.1 with Windows XP. And most time it works.
A guy, An1x friend i know via an german music forum is using Mac and we had some troubles to exchange An1X files. He has very good PC and programming knoweledge and converted all an1 files I posted to yahoo AN1X group in syx Format. He did it with an relieable actual Sys Ex tool.
Elektron C6 - M1 You can dowlaod it for free here :
http://www.elektron.se/support-and-downloads

Its available for Win XP and MAC. The download is a litte bit hard to find.
Direct Download Link for XP :
http://www.elektron.se/sites/default/files/products/files/Elektron_C6_XP_v1.4D.zip
for MAC :
http://www.elektron.se/sites/default/files/products/files/Elektron_C6_OSX_v1.4C.dmg

I tested it with single syx Sounds and here it works in all directions. This guy did the work to
save all my sounds single, so it should be no problem e.g. to load the sys watcher sound from my zip file in your AN1x or to load it via Mac.
Of course thats an solution going back to the roots. Its "only" concerning sound exchange. If any day no editor for An1x on modern platforms will be available, this will be the end of AN1X.

ciao

Hinweis :

AN1x is using different forms of Syx Data transfer. A litte bit silly :

Format a) Only Writing in edit buffer
Format b) Directly storing in a program, not changing edit buffer.

The sounds I posted to An1x group as single syx files are using Format b).
For Example. If you load 003_M_Flute in the Elektron C6 Editor and send it to the AN1x you will
not hear any changes, no Mellotron Flute. Even if you had choosen program Number 003.
Because Edit buffer ist not changed. But Mellotron Flute has been stored on program No 3.
You will hear that if you go to Program number 3. If you loaded the flute An1x set to Prog No 3
you have to go to No 4 or elsewhere and if you return to No 3 you will hear the flute.
Because AN1x is always loading and performing the Edit buffer.
Complicated ? Just try it out :-)
And you will love this AN1x Mellotron stylish flute :-) I am shure.

Forza An1x
Per sempre, l'eternita.
richy

Thanks for this, Richy. The Elektron sysex tool works fine with the AN1X, but it was very helpful to be alerted to the fact that that the patches load in their designated number slot. The mellotrons are great, but I was really impressed by the piano and the more Moogish patches. You have a real talent for patch deign and a genuine feel for the AN1X. Thanks again!

Best,

Chris

Re: AN1X Mellotron

2012-02-18 by bas

I've just listened to these demos after not having used my An1x for 2 years or so....

* JAWDROPPER *

I thought that I knew my An1x quite well including the range of sounds one can coax from it but this is beyond anything I thought possible.....

Now I need to find a way to import these patches using OSC 10.7

C6 does a good job: http://www.elektron.se/support-and-downloads

Yes, they really are fantastic sounds. They sound more musical than
any mellotron samples I've ever come across.

[AN1x] Re: AN1X Mellotron

2012-02-20 by Bastiaan Van de werk

Thanks for the tip. It would be nice though to
be able to manage patches a bit more elegantly... I don't care much for editing on a computer (I'm quite comfortable on the An1x myself) but it would be nice to be able
to have a librarian of sorts allowing me to send / receive patches to / from specific locations so I can assemble banks of my favorite sounds.

I have OSX Lion but a Win7 Partition on my iMac as well - it would suck to have to use an old machine just to upload banks of patches though....

OSX seems out of the question though... :(

Any tips?

Yes. I reinstalled OS9 on an old iBook. An even better solution,
depending on how much old hardware you own, is an Atari ST...I don't
think anyone wants you to use real hardware anymore.

As has been mentioned a couple of times on this list before (so it's
somewhere searchable among the archives):

Go virtual.

Use whatever takes your fancy:
- virtualbox
- virtualpc
- vmware player
- vmware workstation
- or any of the other (free) solutions.

Install an old XP/Windows 2000 32 bits environment, and you're good to
go to run an1xedit from a virtual environment. No need to whip out
another bootable partition or old machine. Just make sure you have the
proper usb/midi support going, and you could be using an1x edit as a
patch librarian.

I myself am still working (well, it's been on hold since 2006) as a
private effort on an implementation for jsynthlib to throw around patches
and all. So don't count on that one getting finished soon :D

The afforementioned an factory
(http://www.xfactory-librarians.co.uk/products.html) seems to be a much
used product among the list members.

I've found this product as well:
http://www.squest.com/Windows/MidiQuestXL/MidiQuest-XLFeatures.html
which supports the An1x (haven't used this, not sure whether someone
else on the list has).

My preference would be to whip out a virtualbox with an old XP image
(reusing some old license found on OEM computers) and hit the librarian
side of things with it.

Good luck!

Gerald

If all you want is a Librarian then my an.factory Librarian (www.xfactory-librarians.co.uk) works on OSX, although Apple seem to have completely screwed up Java MIDI Support in Lion, which I am currently looking at. Grrrr, or is that Rooooaaaaar!

Cheers

Re: [AN1x] OSX Support

2012-02-21 by derek192603

I plan to look at it when I get time.

The basic problem is you used to have to use Plumstone (PPC) or the Mandolane SPI (Intel) to access the external MIDI devices in Java programs, but Apple "fixed" the external MIDI access so theoretically the Plumstone or Mandolane extensions are no longer needed in later OS versions and their Java run time. Mandolane SPI will no longer work on Lion and is no longer being updated. Not a problem if Apple really had fixed external MIDI device access in Java. Sadly they didn't bother with SYSEX support, which is of course essential for patch dumps in either direction.

Still, it's not just Apple. I moved to Windows 7 on my music computer and the SYSEX dumps from my EX5 (via ex.factory) have stopped working, but I managed to track that down and find a workaround for it (for some reason a MIDI Clock stream from the same synth chokes SYSEX reception in Windows 7 now). But how the heck did M$ break what has been working for ten years since the days of Windows 98!

Anyway, I plan to try and resolve the issue on Lion even if it means joining the OpenJava project and sorting out the access problem in Java myself, but I have a lot of music projects on right now so little time for programming right now.

Cheers
Derek
