AN1x editor for Ctrlr (OS X & Windows)

AN1x editor for Ctrlr (OS X & Windows)

2011-10-29 by Zach Archer

Hello, I created an AN1x editor this evening, using Ctrlr. It's ugly
and lumpy, but it works pretty well! Here's the link:
http://ctrlr.org/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=759

Some features aren't implemented yet (there's no way to edit Scene 2,
or the VarFX, etc)... If this editor is useful, then let me know what
features you'd like to have added. Thanks --

awesome! anyone that uses ctrlr gets my respect (i love that thing! :) ).
between that and midi touch the software world is really moving ahead. I'll
definitely check it out and be happy to provide constructive criticism.

Thanks for sharing,

This looks very cool and it's kind of you to share your efforts.

. Will read up on Ctrlr and give this a try - looks like a beautified Logic Environment :-)

If you see the grid, click the "Mode" button. On my screen, this is in the horizontal toolbar on the bottom. It should change to performance mode.

You might need to change MIDI Input Device & MIDI Output Device, too. These are in the big list of properties on the right-hand side, in edit mode.

And... If you have a "Devices" icon in the top toolbar, click that, and make sure that your MIDI devices are available.

I agree that the Ctrlr interface is pretty confusing! Hopefully this will get ironed out in future versions...

Oh, got it! Unfortunately it not seem to work with AN200.
I've selected my midi ports but i don't have any midi activity.
I don't have any error message from AN200 too.

Other AN200 users out there to try?

Hey Zach! Once again i wish to tell you that i find your editor to be very useful and quite the accomplishment - however i was wondering if you know how i can automate the parameters from within the Ctrlr vst plugin? thanks!

Yes, all ctrlr vst knobs are able to be automated AFAIK.

Ctrlr is a beautiful thing :)

So, did it work? I haven't tried it myself. From within Ctrlr, there's a way to export a .panel as a .vst (for Mac or Windows)...

AN1x editor for Ctrlr - AN200 Version

2011-11-09 by dan

Hi Zach, do you think it's possible to me to modify your version of Ctrlr AN1x to make it AN200 compatible?

Of course i need your help to know which parameters to modify.

Let me know

dan

Re: AN1x editor for Ctrlr - AN200 Version

2011-11-11 by zkarcher

I hope it's possible. I looked at the MIDI specifications for the AN1x, and AN200... I'm confused because the SysEx commands looked >the same<. ... Maybe I read it wrong?

I'll take another look tomorrow, I have to pass out now!

When you turn a knob in Ctrlr, does the AN200 show a message?

If memory serves, the SysEx ID of the AN200 differs from the AN1x. Check the Help File of AN1x-edit - I think there were some particulars listed for each of the AN1x, AN200, PLG-150AN

Re: AN1x editor for Ctrlr - AN200 Version

Is AN1x-edit for Mac, or only Windows? (I'm on a Mac)...

Someone in the Ctrlr forums discovered that I was sending the wrong type of events. I created a new version that sends SysEx commands. Here's the link: http://ctrlr.org/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=759&p=4071#p4071

If you have a minute, try this .panel, and let me know if it works for you? Thanks!

Re: AN1x editor for Ctrlr - AN200 Version

2011-11-12 by twobeelandscape

Zach/Dan

The best reference I have found for the differences between AN1X and
PLG150-AN/AN200 is here, which copies from another (now missing) thread
by someone called jondl_2000 [:)]

http://www.synthforum.nl/forums/showthread.php?t=114686
<http://www.synthforum.nl/forums/showthread.php?t=114686>

Key differences for voice editing:

1. The major additions to AN for the PLG150-AN is the introduction of
the VCO cross modulation algorithm and new oscillator wave forms
(Multisaw, Triangle, Sinewave.)
2. The AN1x second Scene is not available on PLG150AN. This will not
affect most AN1x voices, as it is common for only a single Scene to be
used (the second scene providing a variation for morphing or
accompaniment). Note that Scene morphing can be replicated by creating
two voices from the original AN1x voice, each containing one of the
original scenes. Thereafter store these as two separate voices on the
PLG150-AN and use the program scene morph feature of the PLG150-AN
device.
3. Layer/Split Modes - the PLG150-AN only supports Single and Unison
mode.
4. Effects - The PLG150-AN only provides AMP SIM variation effect and
EQ. If the original AN1x effects are important to the voice they must be
recreated using the effects unit of the host device (e.g. CS6x,
SW1000XG, MU100, MU128, S80 etc).

So the main difference in a voice editor would be item 1 (VCO mod/wave),
with the others subject to their importance to you.

Hope that helps

Bill

Re: AN1x editor for Ctrlr - AN200 Version

2011-11-12 by dan

Hi Zach, just tried the new panel. It does not work, but now i got some midi activity.

Here's what i found if i turn the AN200 knobs:
NO RESPONSE of midi activity from:
FEG sustain
FEG release
AEG sustain
VCO 1/2
FM DEPTH
SYNC PITCH
NOISE LEVEL
EFFECT PARAM
SCENE
VOLUME

INPUT MONITOR MIDI ACTIVITY OK from:
LFO SPEED
FEG ATTACK
FEG DECAY
EFFECT WET
PORTAMENTO
CUTOFF
RESONANCE
FEG DEPTH

If i move CTRLR knobs i don't have any message from AN200, no midi activity too.

hope it helps.

The AN200 manual can be had here:

http://www2.yamaha.co.jp/manual/pdf/emi/english/synth/AN200E.pdf

See page 120 for AN200 Native Bulk Dump info - and I think you need the Model Id (5CH) number for the AN200.

Re: [AN1x] Re: AN1x editor for Ctrlr - AN200 Version

Some other differences:

1. PEG Attack is available on the PLG150-AN/AN200 and not the AN1x
2. The Multi Effect (Delay, Flanger, Phaser) is probably part of the
enclosing hardware for the AN200/DX200 as the drums get run through
it as well.
3. The Arpeggiator is not available on the AN200.
4. From item 1 below, Multisaw adds VCO1 Mix and Detune parameters.
5. The Play Effects (Swing, Velocity and Gate Time) are available on
the AN1x and PLG150-AN. The AN200 has Song Gate Time and Song Swing.
It also has a global Play Effect Gate Time which affects the Synth
and all 3 Rhythm tracks.

2011-11-15 by Sobaboy

This currently works the other way. From Ctrlr to the AN200.

It sends MIDI System Exclusive messages to the AN200 to change parameters.

What you are seeing in your MIDI Input Monitor are the MIDI Control
Change codes the AN200 sends out.

Just to check, you have selected the MIDI port that you have the AN200
hooked up to in Ctrlr under Devices and you have selected those ports in
the Panel itself?

Hi Sobaboy, sorry for what i said before because it works!
(little mistake of mine...)

I have not tried all the knobs, but my AN200 responds to the commands with regular midi activity.

Would be great if CTRLR could change its parameters according to AN200 knobs movement in both directions. Is this possible?

I have not tried all the knobs, but my AN200 responds to the commands with regular midi activity.

Would be great if CTRLR could change its parameters according to AN200 knobs movement in both directions. Is this possible?

Yes.

See pages 118-119 of the English AN200 manual a list of parameters that
can be controlled though CC codes.

Set Control Change In/Out to ALL on the AN200
See page 105 in the manual on how to do this.
You want to do this so you have access to more parameters.

You can create a uiSlider and assign it the CC code of the knob you want.

The rest of the parameters have to be done through System Exclusive messages

Yes, it can be downloaded from the Files section of AN1x-list at Yahoo! Groups:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/AN1x-list/files

Look in the Windows and Macintosh directories. The Mac version requires Mac OS Classic, won't run under Leopard or Lion. the Windows version installs under Win 7 and seems to be okay, but I've not MIDI'ed it up to an AN1x proper.

Are there any AN200 owners in the Portland, Oregon (USA) area, who want to hang out, and bring your AN200 along?? I'd like to develop the Ctrlr with a real AN200, otherwise I'm just taking shots in the dark...

AN1x Ctrlr - AN200 as VST - automation in Ableton Live 8

2011-11-21 by dan

I'm wondering if it's possible to automate ALL the parameters in Ctrlr AN1x/An200 panel in Ableton Live, not just CCs, using it as VST.

Maybe it's the goal of the software but i would like to know if anyone has tried it, because in my experience with Live 8 + AN200 only i noticed that it is impossible. The automation go crazy and i must turn off the synth.

Maybe with a software like Ctrlr as bridge would be possible.

let me know. dan

Ableton does not record Sysex - it actively filters it out (thanks a bunch
Ableton for making that Apple-like decision!).
So if some parameters send sysex, then they won't be recorded.

Not sure what is being transmitted if your synth needs a hard-reset... How
are you capturing the automation in Ableton? What are you sending to the
synth to cause it to require a reset? Put a wire-tap on the Midi channel in
Midiox, see what's going on...

What you would need to do to record Sysex in Ableton is put something like
Bome's Midi Translator in between the synth and Ableton. Midiox can be used
for this too. They should work, haven't had the time or patience to try it
tho.
Another option is to go down the M4L (Max4Live) route, which will certainly
capture Sysex... fellas have posted up about this on the Ableton forum.
Really don't feel like going down that route, life's too short....!

What I tend to do is use Reaper for NRPN / Sysex automation, rewiring it
into Ableton... Reaper's scripting languages are great, worth looking into,
and Reaper is light enough to not be a significant drag on System
Resources...

Ehy Eanna! Veri useful informations, thanks.

Maybe i made a mistake with midi connections and the data sent to the synth were too many to handle.

I would like to know if Reaper's sysex automation is easy as editing a cc curve in Ableton or it requires some difficult setting.

Hi,

If you try using the ctrlr VST in Reaper, then all should be well.
Reaper is free to try.
Have a read of this long thread...

http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=33208
Sysex Automation isn't particularly nicely done. Cubase does a fine job of
it by the looks of it, but I've not tried it...

Good luck!
