Okay, I have some cheap recording gear, a singer, some songs, and this cool synthesizer, but I can't honestly find much use for it. Most of the songs are just bass, electric piano, and drums. I've tried synth basses but I just can't get into the sound. Using a free Hammond clone VST (Nubile) for the bass and a free electric piano VST (Mr Ray). Guess I need to listen to some music that's more recent than 1978.

AN1X--great synth for making cool weird noises, difficult to find a real world use for it.

+1 to cool weird noises but as far as real world sounds you lost me there.
The beauty of the an1x is that it's highly valuable as an "emulator" a true
"virtual analog" if you will. Just like an fm synth, its a bit tough to get
to those bread and butter sounds via your own programming, but it can be
done.
Have you spent some time downloading presets from the files section and
downloaded an1x edit? There are plenty of analog keys, ugly basses, sound
effects, analog drums, emulations, pads, etc etc to keep one busy for a long
time.
Yet, its not for everyone...... :)
Nate.

Hi Jimmy !
try Richard"s patches (a German guy), some "real" instruments (organ,
mellotron...) are very impressive.
Cheers.

Brassfemy!

Real world… what does that mean to a guy called Rainbow Jimmy or spaceanimals?

But seriously, did you think when you got it 12 years ago that you’d be using it for writing all those smooth jazz hits you’ve been turning out?

Hmmmmmmm????

Jimmy's gonna get some Dubstep tracks ;-) Maybe some Skirllex, Bassnectar - or some Burial and Joker

You're using it wrong ;-) hahaha

No, just kidding Jimmy

Why don't change it up - download some of the AN1x Voices from back when and check them up - maybe jar your memory what you did and did not like about it.

Remember when the 'Groove Box' scene was taking over the marketing ads back in '97? The AN1x was clearly lumped in with that and lots of the older Voices reflect the then current genres. I loaded a couple of old, Yamaha supplied Voice sets recently and found some Voices aged well, were as others had not. But it was a lot of fun doing so!
