New AN1X owner!

New AN1X owner!

2011-10-05 by Reyes Perez

Hi everyone, I just got my very own AN1X 2 days ago. The synth is in rough shape but mostly everything works. First I changed out the battery and factory reset, but it seems that control pot #4 does not work correctly. Being somewhat handy with a soldering iron, I checked the pot out, but it seems the damage is inside.
Does anyone know of where buy a replacement pot? I've checked out ebay for Alps Japan pots but while I find some similar looking, I'm not sure which one will actually fit correctly.
Also, the pot caps (covers, nob covers, whatever they're called) are all messed up (someone tried to crazy glue I think) and mismatched. Does anyone know where one would aquire a new set or perhaps suggestions for an improved set?
I've just started reading through the manual and I have a ways to go. If I just want to program the synth with it's own controls will pot #4 be an issue? I'm used to menu diving to get my sounds as I still use an SY77, Alesis Micron and DSI Mopho.
Other than that, I look forward to using this synth. I own a polysix and Arp Odyssey and I have to say the AN1X sound is impressive. It may look and feel like a toy compared to Yamaha's other synths, but DAMN that sound is very convincingly analog.
Thanks!

Hi, and welcome. The AN1x is one of Yamaha's greats.
Re the damaged pot, have you tried the spares dept of your local Yamaha dealer? They keep a good stock of spares and have been very efficient when I have dealt with them.

Cheers

The Yamaha knobs are likely very hard to find, maybe second hand ? You
can find guitar pedals knobs which can fit for ex. :

but i' sure you can find such knobs easily in music or electronics DIY
shops. Farnell has some knobs very similar to the AN1x ones, except that
they cannot be mounted on the pots axles... I lost one (the matrix
selector knob) and replaced it with a Fulltone guitar overdrive knob,
found in a local guitar store.
Not a big issue...
It's time to customise your AN1x, the stock knobs are not the prettiest....
Cheers.

I tried out the electibe knobs and they fit great but the feel too small in the fingers to use haha. Oh well, it's not a big deal what IS a big deal is Assign 4's pot seems to be busted. I have to lean it to the left then turn it if I want it to register value, and once I let go it resets to 0.
I may just have to email Yamaha about a direct replacement pot. If no luck there, I'll just try opening it up and see if the wiper is bent or something.

Hi !
try first some contact cleaner sold in small canisters in any DIY
electronics shop, like KF or similar. Maybe your pot is only dirty, or
the wiper oxyded.... it works fine most of the time for any pot or selector.
Cheers.
