ribbon controller fault?

ribbon controller fault?

2011-09-15 by CLINTON BUTCHER

Everytime I use the ribbon controller on my Yamaha AN1x it won't let the patch
go back to it's original state ie; if I use the ribbon controller to open and
close the filter it ends up making the sound muffled and I have to change the
patch to something else and then back again to get it to sound correct.

 Does this sound correct?
I haven't used the AN1x for a while and wondered if this was a fault?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Not really, it depends on the patch, with some others you don't have
this problem.... I think it's a software bug, but nothing serious.

The Ribbon Controller has a Latch function depending on the parameter being affected.

See Page 75 of the Owner's Manual. When assigned to Pitch Up/Pitch Down, the Ribbon is suppose to return to center. For other values it will latch on the X-axis.

It could be the latch function - or it could be a defective ribbon. I posted a while back looking for advice to fix my ribbon, which was responding erratically. It wasn't the connections or the setup, it was the physical ribbon. There was no solution, and the part is no longer available from Yamaha. So I disconnected the ribbon.

That was my backup AN1x; the one I use for gigging was fine - until last month. Now it too has a bad ribbon. It won't go back to the original setting when pressed, and sometimes changes parameters randomly, without being touched. Sometimes when I power up, *most* of the patches sound wrong (too much resonance, filter cutoff wrong). I can make them sound right by pressing the ribbon, but they may or may not stay right. So I also disconnected that ribbon one. :-(

I may try cleaning the ribbon (between the layers of ribbon material) or changing the tightness of the attachment screws, because those seemed to help on the first one. But it was only temporary. :-(

I believe the ribbon is a weak point, and will eventually fail over time or with a lot of use. Too bad; its function can be assigned to a knob so the ribbon isn't essential - but it is (was) a cool performance gesture. It also allowed e.g. a filter sweep and pitch change (with the wheel) to be done with one hand.

I'll post results *if* I manage to fix this one.

I have had an erratic ribbon controller for quite some time. Patches would sound weird and not right, if I ran my finger along the ribbon a few times it would generally fix things, but not for long. The other day I opened the AN1x and unplugged the ribbon...and what a huge difference!  I think the dodgy ribbon was making my synth sound flat......now its alive and amazing sounding, and I don't miss the ribbon control one bit. I recommend unplugging this to anyone else having the same glitchy ribbon problems.Cheers.

Hi !

with some patches where the ribbon controller is involved it "freezes" in the last position when you leave it, and with others not. To fix it change the patch then get back : done ! IMHO it's a software bug but not a ribbon failure. When this ribbon fails it does nothing, like when you unplug it.

Cheers.

P.S. : The mod wheel can suffer similar troubles when you "morph" between the 2 "scenes" of a complex patch. Fixed once by a complete re programming of the patch... why ? I don't know... But the AN1x is globally a reliable machine. Common issues : the backup battery and sometimes keyboard contacts, nothing more.
