What external module can take a PLG150-AN daughterboard?

What external module can take a PLG150-AN daughterboard?

2011-05-20 by engelkott

Hi all!

I have had a Yamaha SW1000XG and PLH150-AN daughterboard for a number of years and because everything is moving over to PCI-E my SW1000XG no longer has a place in my computer because I want to keep my Pulsar II instead.

I was wondering what old or new module can I buy which can take the AN card? Naturally I prefer the cheaper the better and I only need the module to run the AN board and preferably a ½ rack size.

I know it is a big ask but if anyone will know they will be here! :) Doing a Google search produced reviews of the AN board but maybe I am not searching with the correct criteria.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Try to find a second hand AN200 : it has the same base, if not your
famous PL150_AN card inside. The size is about a standard book....
Cheers.

There's the Kenton Plugstation, but it's been out of production for a
while now. No idea whether you can pick one up second-hand. It's a 1U
rack module that can take up to four PLG cards.

I think some of the older Yamaha MU series modules also accept the PLG cards too... if you're on a budget...

Hi,

If you keep an eye out on E-bay you might luck on to a cheap MU-2000ex. The
final Japan only model of the entire XG series.
It takes 3 PLG boards, but also is a fairly useful sound module and external
sound processor in its own right.
Its got something like 32meg of XG sound ROM, and you can also load 4mb of
your own samples into memory from a smartcard.
Midi files can also be played from the smartcard. This should in theory
allow you to load your own voice banks to the PLG cards, by embedding them
into midi files and playing them back. Which is what a Motif or CS6 does on
boot up.
I have'nt got that far yet though. The couple of times I have set out to
check it out, I have been wandered off into the MU's rather deluxe effects
processing capabilities, or the rather mysterious sampler section. Using XG
works is a bit of a chore too.

The main problem with this unit is the lack of English documentation- theres
none, so its strictly "try and see". If you've used another XG module, most
of it is the same.

I have a theory that the MU2000ex upgrade gave it an effects section on par
with the motif classic. There's all sorts of tasty effects including vintage
filters, flangers & phasers, and even a multi band compressor.
Reverb+Chorus+Variation+4 Insert effects+EQ- Tasty!
I have been able to load soundfonts by converting them to DLS format O using
the Awave demo. Although I have'nt been able to work out mapping etc. It
will be just a matter of tinkerage.

It was a bargan for $185. I added 2 AN cards and a Harmoniser plg, its a
fairly good rack AN1x maybe.

Cheers
Jeremy

Sorry for coming to this thread a little late ;-)

Personally I use a Kenton Plugstation, sadly no longer manufactured. Occasionally see them on ebay.

To me, it's the best plg host ever made. Why .....?

It hosts 4 plg cards of your choice .... I have DX, AN, VL, and PF. The four cards operate on midi channels 1 to 4.

It provides 8 analog outputs, each card can be allocated its own stereo output. You can route them all the the same outputs if you want to merge the signals into one stereo output, and can set volume and pan positions for each card.

It also has an 8 channel ADAT out, which provides pristine output without digital to analog conversion, again, each card can be allocated its own stereo output pair, or the sounds can be merged.

The sounds get recorded into my DAW via an audio interface with ADAT in, so there is no D/A then A/D conversion. The recorded signal is pristine.

D/A conversion is only needed at the playback stage when outputting the recorded audio.

Only limitation is that for the plugstation to be a digitally synced slave, you have to connect it to an SW1000XG card in a computer. Kenton never got around to providing a digital in on the plugstation itself for clocking purposes. So if not using an SW1000 card, and I don't any more, then the ADAT signal from the plugstation has to be the clock master, with everything else slaving to it. Not an issue though, everything syncs up fine.

Anyway, there's my 2pence worth.

Cheers,

N

[Mod Edit: this post has been edited to remove an excessive number of carriage return characters that made it difficult to read. The content of the post remains unchanged.]

What serial#you have? i have the 0069.

the Adat outputs can be reclocked, alsoSRC to 96khz or more in real time...
using a Lucid 88192 or Alesis Ai-4 "96khz", etc...
Masterclock----> adat ---> aes/ebu ---> Lynx aes16 "Synchrolock(TM) Dissabled"

or withLucid 8824 "48khz"
Masterclock @ 96khz or 192k----->adat--->8824-aes/ebu-->Lynx AES16-SRC "Synchrolock(TM) Dissabled"

or with no Masterclock, still improves a bit:
adat--->ls.adat-->lynx aes16 "Synchrolock(TM) Enabled"

can also be done other ways...
withTC Electronic Finalizer 96k "serial#>1300xxx" or similar. "but limited to 1 stereo pair" Drawmer masterflow dc2476 mk2, etc...

reclocked soundsbetter. SRC even better when mixing ITB.

can also be done with RME hdsp9632 / AIO SyncAlign & DDS active BUT... the Kenton with improved PSU has better clock than RME SteadyClock(TM).

toimprove the Plugstation:can be done using a variable output5amp Lab grade Linear DC power supply...
"Gw instek gps-1850, sorensen xt10.5,mastech, xantrex, etc..." set to 7vdc,.
+ Belden 8450 or 51.
very easy upgrade.

feelsfaster when booting, also DA clockjitter is lower, sounds with more punch & more defined.

the Plugstation DA converters has a character to it...
some patchessound like EQed bass heavy, dark highs + slow attack transient designer.
some others sound very similar...

for thosemixing OTB analog desks...
Plugstation has sealed metallic capacitors = built to last, butcan be upgraded to Tantalum or Audiophile quality cardas, mundorf, silmic2, nichicon gold, etc...
http://www.partsconnexion.com/

i reclock & work ITB at 96khz... butwant to work at 192khz.
