My biggest problem with the AN1X is the potentiometers attached right to the circuit board. I have been told by an amp tech that this is how everything is done these days. If I bought a new Mini Moog or a new Dave Smith synth (like I could ever afford to) would they have the pots attached to the circuit board?

Though i can't speak for specifics (i tried googling circuit diagrams for
some popular newer synths, and as you can imagine, they're pretty well under
wraps) I can say most any device i've ripped apart recently has had the pots
on the pcb. I think in most cases you "could" change them if you had to, but
I don't know how difficult it is or if you'd damage something else in the
process. I know my evolver uses rotary no-stop encoders, so i would be near
positive they're on the pc-board, but I'd imagine moog stuff (high-end moog
stuff not the "phatty" series) would have physical pots. Just venturing a
guess.

pots are kind of a dying art..... It's cheaper and more reliable to make
things digitally controlled.

What's wrong with those pots, Jimmy ?
Need to change them ?
Yes, most of today's electronics are done like that. But it's not a big
issue if you have some (inexpensive) hand pump to remove the melted
solder when you remove the pots. Soldering iron in one hand, pump in the
other, and go ! Act carefully an patiently however if you don't want to
rip off some PCB track or burn the pot !
Cheers.
