Stuck on startup screen - unit won't function.

Stuck on startup screen - unit won't function.

2011-01-27 by smoke_lin_kuei777

Hi, I am having a problem with my AN1X. I recently turned it on and it
got stuck on the "Yamaha 1997" screen and won't go any further. It won't
make any sound or do anything. I opened the unit up and nothing appears
visisbly damaged or burnt out. It has taken a few minor bumps from
travel; could that have something to do with it? Has anyone had a
problem like this before? Thanks in advance for any help.

I found a thread of a guy who had the same issue as
you<http://fr.audiofanzine.com/synthe-modelisation/yamaha/AN1X/forums/t.306617,an1x-blocage-sur-welcome-an1x.html>and
he said the problem was the power supply.

It's in French but you can use Babel Fish or Google Translate...

In fact, 2 guys had this issue and they both resolved it. I would have been
really scared if I was you!

I was scared! I'm gonna try another outlet to see if that's it. I also don't have the original power supply, but it worked fine for awhile. If the wall socket doesn't solve it, can I buy a replacement from yamaha? or do i need to start looking on ebay?

The the factory AC Adapter was model PA-3B. Once very common, now discontinued.

I believe the Yamaha factory replacement is mode PA130:

Well I found the problem I think.
At first I tried replacing the internal battery - it had been displaying battery low for almost a year. When I replaced it I didn't snap it in all the way. I feel like such a dope.
I do however have the infamous "crackles and pops" issue >_<
Thanks for all of your help, the guy I bought the synth from recommended this group. This places lives up to the hype and then some.

I've seen the PA130 mentioned before, but searched the group and couldn't find any mention of anyone actually using it on an AN1x. Power specs are correct but Yamaha doesn't give you the plug dimensions or polarity. They say it "replaces" the PA3C, but the PA3C is not discontinued; the PA130 is just a different type (switching vs transformer)

But the original AN1x power supply was the PA3B, and Yamaha doesn't mention a replacement for it. I don't know if the PA3C has the same plug; I've never seen an original AN1x power supply. ;-) In any event, the PA130 doesn't sound like a slam-dunk replacement, unless someone here can report successfully using one.

I've used Arcade Electronics as a source of cheap power supplies for a couple different synths. The Arcade website lets you choose voltage, amperage, polarity, and plug size. This is the one I got for the AN1x:
http://www.arcade-electronics.com/detail.aspx?ID=18887

Its plug is slightly shorter than "standard" so it may be a bit less secure, but I've been gigging with it for 5 years with no problems. It was only about $6 but the shipping was $7, total about $13.

The PA130 - assuming the plug fits! - *should* be more reliable because it's a switching power supply instead of the old-school transformer. But the only switching power supply I ever owned - a OneSpot used to power pedals - failed after 2 years. No matter what kind of power supply you end up with, always have a spare handy.
