internal battery replacement

2010-11-13 by max

i am so sorry for such an obvious newbie question but i've been searching the archives and searching with google, and i just wondered is there anywhere a step by step guide to changing the internal battery?? I can't even work out how to open the case! :(

any help very gratefully received,

thx,
max

Just open up the bottom of the synth, it's mostly CR2450 and not the
usual CR2032 in a battery holder...

Yeah, opening the case is simply a matter of removing the screws on the bottom - lots of them! No need to keep track of which goes where; they're all the same. When you flip it over, rest the top on something that won't damage the knobs (I use a couple of stragetically placed paperback books). The battery is the silver disc, about the size of a quarter; pops right out of the battery holder. Go buy one with the same number, pop it in. They're most commonly used as "security system" batteries these days, so hardware stores usually have them.

BTW, you can remove/replace the battery without losing patches in memory, by leaving the power supply plugged in and the power on while doing the battery swap. I'm sure this isn't "recommended" but I tried it once and it does work. There's only 15 volts in there... If you don't wanna to this, have some way to save & restore your patches. AN1xEdit is great; look for discussion of AN1xEdit on this group.

Right, but beware of short circuits !
Be _very careful_ with the screwdriver and other metal parts (screws,
nuts...) when doing like that...some chips could not like to get too
high voltages on their pins (logic ICs : 5 V max.).
Cheers.

And If,.. Your new battery don't go into it's place, just go and exchange/buy new one from different manufacturer. Usually they match, but not 100%. I bought first Renata CR2450N (is that N the difference?) and no way to put that into the holder!
Varta CR2450 just cliked in.

Greetz, Boogie.

Hi all,

I will soon change my battery and I am wondering if I should backup my
patches before proceeding? I guess not by reading this conversation but I
would just like to be sure...

Thanks,

Never mind. I searched some more and other users said we must make a backup
before changing the battery.

But I still have another stupid question. I don't understand how removing
the battery could affect the patches? Aren't they saved on some kind of hard
drive? Or are they really kept loaded in memory with the battery?

I have no clue since I never did anything like that...

Thanks for your help!

Damn, I am dumb! Sorry for polluting your mailboxes but the answer was just
on this thread. I think I just searched for the word "backup" and didn't
find anything so I posted my question here.

Van already answered all my questions below:

"BTW, you can remove/replace the battery without losing patches in memory,
by leaving the power supply plugged in and the power on while doing the
battery swap".

I will try that since I don't even have a MIDI interface...

A hard drive? We're talking about a few kilobytes, at most, of data.
Even in 1997, when the AN1x first came out, a hard disc would have a
capacity of several gigabytes, which is in a totally different league.

(1 kilobyte: 1024 bytes; 1 megabyte: 1024 kilobytes; 1 gigabyte: 1024
megabytes.)

So yes, it's just a little bit of memory backed up by a battery. Today,
I saw the 'low battery' warning for the first time. Have had the AN1x
since 1998...

Re: [AN1x] internal battery replacement

Hi Peter,

Yes I understand this is not much data. Sorry, I couldn't find any better
word for "persistent storage" than "hard drive"...

I guess it was cheaper to keep the patches this way than really persisting
the data on whatever medium.

I now wonder if the new synths are still built this way...

Thanks a lot!

YES, unless you don't mind to loose all the patches stored in your
keyboard (i.e : you have them on your computer as .an or .mid files...)

YES. These patches are stored in a static CMOS RAM (not a flash
EEPROM...) which in "stand by mode" is supplied by the back up battery.
The extremely low, but not null, supply current (a few nA) in this
special mode allows years of storage without the help of the main P.S.
But without any supply all is wiped out . When the AN1x was designed,
flash EEPROMS vere too small and too slow, and a hard disk would be too
huge and too expensive to store only a few tens of kbytes. An AN1x patch
is not a sampled sound but only a few lines of data and instructions.

If you don't want for some reason of your own to make a memory backup on
a computer you can try the "kamikaze way" : open your synth, turn on the
main supply and then change your battery BUT take care of short circuits
when you're doing that. The screwdrivers or pliers are obviously
conductive, but the battery itself (even flat out..) too : don't touch
anything else with any metal part. When the main supply is "on" the RAM
is in "active mode" and does not need any other supply.
Cheers.

Hi Jeff,

I will go for the kamikaze way! I never even connected any of my synths to a
computer.

I'll get back to confirm how it went...

Thanks,

Just fyi having replaced batteries on other synths previously - if you have
patches on your an1x you REALLY don't want to lose, id recommend buying a
cheap usb/midi cable (under $10 on evilbay) and just downloading them all to
an1xedit.
In theory, if you leave the machine on, your patches will not be lost, but
if it drops power or something shorts you could be totally messed over.
Just saying its $10 that's totally worth it for transferring patces and id
hate to lose some of mine....

Re: [AN1x] internal battery replacement

2011-03-13 by Jelli Philippe

FWIW, I replaced my AN1x battery 2 days ago, and I didn't loose any of the patches

(the 'battery low' message was the first reason I subscribed to this list btw)

I did a memory backup with Sysex Librarian first (working great btw)

but I didn't had to use it to restore the memory afterwards.

better have an electrical screwdriver though, because there are 33 of those !

There's a reason this is called the "kamikaze method": if you
accidentally cross two connections on one of the printed circuit boards,
you may well blow up (part of) the AN1x. Replacement would be difficult
and expensive - and you'd still lose your patches.

So be very sure that you are comfortable with doing this.

Me too, funily enough.
What I did is remove the base, then power the synth up before removing the battery & replacing it, so no patches were lost.
easy.

Re: [AN1x] internal battery replacement

2011-05-25 by Jerome St-Pierre

I just wanted to say the kamikaze method also worked for me. Nothing got
fried and I am still alive!

The battery I ordered was thicker than the original, so it got in but the
small blade wouldn't snap over it. Anyway, it seemed very solid and it won't
pop out...
