I'm in love with AN200 but......? AN200 Vs VIRUS C

2010-06-03 by daniele

Hi everybody,

I got an AN200 and a VIRUS C and i can say the overall sound of the 2 synths is quite different.
I think our beloved AN200/AN1X got more 'beef' in analog-like sounds, but it lacks in multitimbrality. Even the poliphony is less than half of the virus c.

I am wondering if you know a big-synth-brother of the AN200, with the same beefing characteristics, but with more polyphony and 16 parts of multitimbrality.
I think i am going insane because i'm thinking about buying one or two more AN200 to overlap the sounds in real time (!!!).

thanks
dan

I rarely find multitimbrality an issue in a modern context. Back in the 90s when I ONLY had one synth and it all had to be sequenced in one go, fair enough - my TG-500 rack was sweet for that. These days, with Daws and infinite tracks/overbubs etc - I find I don't care if a synth is even monotimbral as long as it sounds good. In fact the majority of my synths are MT (obv as they are mostly older analogs and early digitals).
Of course as you seem to be more interested in 'live' performance where you can't just keep adding parts I understand, but AN1x (and esp an200) wasn't really meant for that, nor were true analogs. That's what workstations are for.
There's no big brother for An200 (other than an1x). You could try adding AN plug in cards to a motif/cs6 or whatever but can't recall if you'll get more than 10 notes in total even then (with 2 cards) - and I suppose they also would have multitimbral quirks too.
Of course the KEYBOARD AN1x has 10 note poly and is far more 'powerful' than the AN200 (I don't mean sound wise), if you were serious about buying another an200 I'd certainly look at an an1x first. :)

To be honest i've always found that particular constraint of the AN200 forces me to be creative in the way I use it - just another reason I love my lil yellow box :-P

If you really like the AN 200 sounds more than others, buy another one !
But the main issue will be to send the missed notes from the 1st AN200
out of polyphony to its brother. I don't know if this is possible from
scratch, on some other synths it is possible (i.e. my old Evolution
EVS1). Or maybe you can use these "AN200 equivalent" sound cards (i
don't remember the name) in some dedicated rack.
Cheers.

Thanks Paul, Joe and Jeff!
maybe now i think it would be better add the AN200 to my multitimbral setup (virus c and proteus 2000). Sometimes it's true cool sounding boxes can't be beaten even by some expensive analog mono classics.

The AN200 limits, and the limits in general are very inspiring, compared to the 'open sea' of endless possibilities! With 2 AN200 i think it would not be possible to play 10 notes, but nevermind because i need to play 2 different timbres rather than one.

bye!
