My "new" AN1x is broken... ?

My "new" AN1x is broken... ?

2009-09-12 by Bobo Wieland

Hi all,

I bought an AN1x second hand and it seems to be broken. I get no
sound from the FX-unit at all. The ribbon controller doesn't work and
I can't do a factory reset (holding down 7+8+9 send me to test mode).

I managed to upload some patches to it, but the patch names doesn't
show up correctly and some sounds does not sound like they are
supposed to sound.

In test mode it states that it is an "cs3x v0.31" . It seems like it
is a very early OS in it (Is it an early machine? S/N: 312)? Shouldn't
it be v1.04? Any information about this old version and which versions
that do exists. Where can I get an upgrade? Will it fix my problems?

Please have some information for me! =)

RE: [AN1x] My "new" AN1x is broken... ?

2009-09-13 by Ed Edwards

Very strange sounding problem.

Might be a bad ROM chip. Or – might be a cracked or bad motherboard.

Recommend taking it to a quality technician for analysis.

Indeed it seems that there's an early version of the OS, judging by what this article states: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1997_articles/aug97/yamahaan1x.html (it appears that the the AN1x was initially supposed to be named CS3x)

Hello !
> In test mode it states that it is an "cs3x v0.31" .
It's curious that the O.S. test mode answers "CS3x"...
The CS series from Yamaha is completely different from an electronic
point of view, but the housing is very close to the AN1x, in fact it's
the same with little difference, mostly the color and some
knobs/switches. See :
http://www.vintagesynth.com/yamaha/an1x.php
Maybe you've got a "croosbreed" between an AN1x (the case) and some CS
synth (inside)...
I'm not sure it's possible but it would be funny...

Re: [AN1x] My "new" AN1x is broken... ?

2009-09-16 by Jon Carroll

a CS3x *is* an AN1x. CS3x was the product development name for the AN1x. So
someone manages to get a CS3x (prototype An1x) board with early ROMS that
say CS3x and then put it in an an1x case? more likely, its a rest model or
prototype.

Re: [AN1x] My "new" AN1x is broken... ?

2009-09-16 by Jeff

Hi folks !
i was quite joking but ...
Try to program the ribbon controller, because you have to assign it at 2
parameters in the current patch. If not it does not work, of course, but
this is the default setting of the ribbon. Less likely it may be out, it
is not a very "mechanical" part, but sometimes this can happen on laptop
PCs, why not on an AN1x ?
Do you have the user manual, or better the "AN1x Voice Set-up Guide"
with detailed sound program examples? Try to program one sound from
scratch using this guide and/or the manual. If it is not a real AN1x
you'll meet soon some missing or different parameter(s).
You can go to :
http://www.deepsonic.ch/
too At the "AN1x" page you'll find some detailed views of what is inside
an AN1x : open your instrument and compare what you see at home and on
your computer monitor...
Cheers

2009-09-16 by Jeff

Yes Jon, i know, there never was a CS3x. I don't know that our favorite
keyboard was going to be named "CS3x", thanks.
But what's happening to Bobo is very strange and, i must say , funny .
What to do ? Try everything printed in the manual to be sure it's "the
real thing".
Cheers.

Two thoughts... first, that you can't perform a Factory reset and patch names are garbled implies your AN1x needs a new battery. See an authorized Yamaha service center in your vicinity - you can probably locate one from a Yamaha website. An OS update won't solve that issue.

second, it's not uncommon for connections to come loose during shipping or long term storage - I would suggest the Ribbon Controller malfunction might be attributed to a loose internal connection to the AN1x main board. There are some tips in the list archives and the Files section for disassembling an AN1x, not a hard feat by any stretch if you've the time and inclination.

Jon

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I've contacted Yamaha and is waiting for their response. A minor update since my initial post:

I changed the battery - which changed nothing.
I also discovered that 7+8 (not 7+8+9) while powering up gets the machine into Test Mode, while 4+5 does some form of Factory Set! (but this just resets every sound bank to some sort of initial sound (the same for all presets).
I've managed to import some sounds from my PC - most sounds come out ok, but some sounds will be totaly off while yet another some will cause the an1x to panic. One significant thing though; even if I can store a preset the name of the preset will not be saved. The name will revert to Init00x.

sounds like the rom is curupted and as seeing it is a prototype model might need a new set of roms to bring it up to the latest firmware when you open up the synth se what rom version you have its usually 2 sets 1 for upper and 1 for lower se what version they are and ask yamaha whats the latest versions of rom even though the synth is out of production there should be able to provide a set of roms if not they should be able to give you a copy of the iso to burn your own

Just to add to what Jon has said, it's also my experience (as an electronics engineer in an earlier life!) that and socketed integrated circuits as well as connectors can come loose over time due to a phenomenon called "thermal creep". If a circuit gets warm and thus heats up and cools down as you turn it on and off then the expansion and contraction due to the heating/cooling can slowly work chips out of their sockets over the course of months and years. I've even had extreme cases on boards that consumed a lot of power (and thus dissipate a lot of heat) where if I had turned a board upside down then the chips would have fallen out! This obviously doesn't apply to soldered components, but typically things like OS ROMs are socketed. So if you have strange behaviour you can't explain then it is always worth giving socket chips a firm press. I'm not saying it' the cause of your problem, but if you're clutching at straws......

Sometimes connections also oxidise over time as well depending on the material that they are made of, so taking out and reseating connectors is also worth doing.

If you don't get a reply from Yamaha, then please let me know. I have a few contacts in Yamaha UK who may possibly help shed some light on the mystery.

Cheers
Derek

Sorry to hear changing the battery did not help, that's surprising (at least to me it is.)

Have you popped the case and checked the ribbon controller connection?

It will be interesting to see if Yamaha can sort you out with a new EPROM. Per user reports to this list, it's been reported v1.04 was discontinued some time ago - not surprising for a synth this old now. Some european users were reporting success dealing with Yamaha, but that was some time ago.
