Convert MIDIfile to AN1

Convert MIDIfile to AN1

2008-09-18 by Luc Hogie

I found tons of free voices on the net, in the form of
midifiles. I want to load those files into An1xedit
but this software apparently does not provide any
"import midi" feature. Is there a way to load the
sysex into an1xedit other than transmitting to the
an1x (using any midi player) and then sending
all voice data back to the computer (to an1xedit)???

Thanks,
Luc.

Hi,

You could send the MIDI files to the AN1x using something like MIDIOX,
store them in the AN1x and read back into AN1x edit, but you've
already mentioned you want to avoid that!

So you could take a look at my an.factory librarian over at
www.xfactory-librarians.co.uk (Group MODs - I hope you don't mind me
mentioning my apps when they can potentially help somebody? :-) )

an.factory can open SYX and MID files with AN1x data in them, and you
can them send them to the AN1x edit buffer for auditioning and/or copy
them to an AN1 file from the comfort of your computer.

HTH.

You can use a freeware called MidiOX, available on countless websites.
It sends and receives any MIDI data, but you cannot edit your patches.

RE: [AN1x] Convert MIDIfile to AN1

2008-09-18 by Ed Edwards

There’s something conceptually confusing me here…

MIDI is the code system for transmitting musical notes and the other
associated parameters needed to create songs. (Note tone (low, high),
length, rests, velocities (mp, p, ff, etc.), dynamics (cresendos,
decreshendos), and a few other fancies to help provide expression (hold
pedal, pitch bend and mod wheels, and as does the AN1x, knobs, ribbons and
fader pedals). It is meant to make music (or maybe we could say songs).

Voices, also known as Patches are the parameters that make one instrument
sound different than another. Low or high registers, sound created from
reed, brass, struck string, hammered string, plucked string, how long the
string is, what the string is made of, the type of wood it’s mounted to…
these are the things that make a voice.

I do realize that some synthesizers are able to save patch data as MIDI,
but this data would be in the system exclusive format… commonly known as
sysex. Now if you’d said, I found tons of free voices in sysex on the
net, I’d have 2 questions. First are they created for the AN1x? If so,
good, then we can use MIDIOX or a program like it to dump them back into
the AN1x to try them. My second question would be how do you know they’re
created for the AN1x? Not to be a party poop, but if someone wanted to be
really nasty, they could write sysex data that might not be healthy for
your little pet to be chewing on.

Look in the files section of our Yamaha group. There’s lots of excellent
patches there, almost all have been checked by me (because I’m a geek like
that) and most of them are from the excellent AN1xEdit program.

Hi,

The AN1x MID files I have seen are MIDI sequences with embedded SYSEX
voice dumps in them, which means they can be sent to the AN1x by any
sequencer or ever Windows Media Player.

The only sure fire way of checking to see if if a SYSEX dump is for
the AN1x is to look inside the file with a hex editor and check that
the SYSEX ID numbers match those for "Yamaha" and "AN1x".

I've never heard of a MIDI virus before or anybody trying to damage to
your system by maybe, for example, setting parameters to something
that will fry your speakers. The SYSEX is patch data not executable code.

In all the years I've spent downloading other patch collections, I've
never had a problem.

Cheers
Derek

Agreed.

I stepped outside the bounds of the normal with the warning. Although it is
completely feasible to create malicious sysex code, I’ve never heard of it
having been done.

To piggyback on Jeff's post...

Mac OS X user's can use SysEx Librarian to the same ends as MIDI OX

http://www.snoize.com/SysExLibrarian/

Many of the original Yamaha Voices in our Files section here at Yahoo! Groups contain .MID
files for the AN1x.

Edition capabilities of AN1xEdit

2008-09-21 by Luc Hogie

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies regarding midiToAn1. The best I found
was to send the voices via midi to the AN1x and then to get the data
back to AN1xEdit. If I don't consider the huge amount of sysex transfer
errors that I get, the solution is not too bad.

Well now I'm fighting with AN1xEdit. I'm actually doing pretty simple
things like "moving a voice from one memory slot to another". The
intuitive solution on Windows apps is to select the voice, cut it
(Ctrl+X) and paste it (Ctrl+V) elsewere. But it seems that AN1xEdit
does not even support that!
So I'm wondering how you guys are doing to organize your voice banks.
Any testimony?

Thanks,
Luc.

PS: yes the AN1x is a remarkably inexpensive and fine-sounding synth.
I love it. :)

Luc,

You may be right about AN1xEdit. I haven't used if for a while... are you
using a Mac or PC? Jon, our moderator uses a Mac. I use a PC but I haven't
used the software for a while.

Any helpers out there?

I'm using AN1xEditv1.1 on a PC and the way
it works is pretty akward. But I will stop complaining
because without this software life would be much harder. :-)

By the way, I am looking for a great electric bass voice
for the AN1x. I heard one in the past, but I can't
figure out where I found it. Do you have any suggestion?
(yes I want to humiliate the bassist of our band :-)

Thanks,
Luc.

If I remember right, you can open multiple files, then use
the "edit" button in top left corner. It has copy and paste
functions. A little slower than the AN expert editor/librarian (for
the plg150an), which works drag-and-drop style. It can open and
edit .AN1 files, but can only save as an .ANS
file.

It is actually amazing that the last build of AN1xEdit
was made 8 years ago!!! The AN1x is still a pretty
modern synth. Too bad that AN1xEdit is dead. :(
It would be really nice if a guy
who has the source code would make a little
refresh (at least a recompilation for 64 bits OSs).
Also considering most important users wishes
would take little time and would make AN1x
player much happier with the sofware!

Code owner, if you read me, please think about it. :)

hi there,

not strictly on topic and perhaps a little stoopid...but

how do I change a file with the .an1 suffix to a .mid suffix.

I am using osx and therefore an1xedit is of no use to me!

any help would be appreciated!

If I remember right, you can open multiple files, then use
the "edit" button in top left corner. It has copy and paste
functions. A little slower than the AN expert editor/librarian (for
the plg150an), which works drag-and-drop style. It can open and
edit .AN1 files, but can only save as an .ANS
  file.

Unless you're using a Mac that is capable of running Classic (OS 9), the AN1xEdit is no use
to you - unless you're running Bootcamp and Windows in which you could the Win version.

AN1x will Export a .AN1 file as a sysex file, so it's easy enough to convert from one to the
other.

AN1xEdit also works when using a virtualization program (i.e.
Parallels or VMWare), in which case sending MIDI data the way of
AN1xEdit --> Virtual Machine --> MacOS X --> MIDI Out (USB or Firewire
interface) also works.

USB/MIDI EMU 1X1

Just to warn people: don't buy the EMU 1X1 USB/MIDI
interface if you plan to use it along with the AN1x.
It exhibits 30% of data transfer errors, which make
it unusable. I guess this is because of very imprecise
MIDI synchronization.
You better buy some more serious (expensive)
MIDI interface.

You might want to search the list archives, or check the FAQ, as this was once an often
discussed topic (suitability of USB MIDI interfaces.) The SysEx packet size from the AN1x is
unusually large, i.e., not very efficient, which contributes to the errors you've witnessed.
