firmware upgrade

Is it possible to upgrade my AN1x to 1.04 firmware. IF so where do I
get the firmware file and how do I do it?

Thanks,

Lee

You need a new hardware chip for that. Unless you're having problems
with your AN1x, it's probably not worth it: the bugs that were fixed
between releases were all minor.

Any idea on where I can get one. I have had the synth since 1997 and I
am starting to have issues with the synth that I am hoping the new
eprom can resolve.

The EPROM only addressed a coupe of minor, bug fixes. It's unlikely you will (still) be able to
acquire one from Yamaha at this late date, but even more unlikely the EPROM will address
your concerns with your AN1x.

What specific issues are you having with the synth? Perhaps there is advice to be had from
the list...

Jon

Well the first time I turn it on it seems to to respond to any midi
notes at all. If I turn it off and back on again it seems to be
fine. Sometimes when I boot it the LCD doesnt display any info.
Again a reboot usually fixes it. Also if I leave it on for a period
of time the lcd screen will go blank.

Since you have had and used the synth since 1997 and these are new problems, it is doubtful these are OS related problems.....they sound like an intermittant or problem with either internal system clock, power or reset circuitry.....

I wonder if its possible to have someone repair the synth. This was
my first synth ever and my late father bought for me. I may have to
check and see if anyone local can make the repair.

From the Yamaha web site, these are the authorized repair centers in your area:

FIELD SERVICES
2445 E THOMAS RD STE D
PHOENIX , AZ 85016
602-956-4199
[ View Map ]
7.66 miles

ARIZONA ORGAN REPAIR
6829 W COLUMBINE DR
PEORIA , AZ 85381
602-955-2400

Give them a call and see if they have experience enough with the AN1x and what their rates are....

RE: [AN1x] Re: firmware upgrade

2008-08-04 by Ed Edwards

Before you shell out cash, you need to be a brave synth user and take off
the bottom cover.

Why? Because the intermittent problems you speak of are often caused by
heat and vibration which can partially unseat connectors and chips. Press
down on any socketed chips, unplug and replug all connectors. (Of course do
this with the thing unplugged.) Look around carefully at the entire
circuitry (there’s not a whole lot) and while you’re inside, replace the
coin (patch memory) battery.

If you feel squeamish about this, find a trustworthy friend who may have
experience with electronics and ask them to help you. It will take you less
than an hour and might be all that you need to fix yours up.

Hi there,
I DID recently (2 months ago) manage to obtain the 2.04 OS upgrade
from Yamaha's UK Technical support.

Whether or not it will fix your issues will remain to be seen.
But I'll dig out the contact details for you anyway.
Probably best if PM the info to you, if you're still interested.
Best

Hi!
check your backup battery... It's inside your synth, like on a computer
motherboard.
Cheers!

I second Eds response. I have a Digitech Studio Quad MFX unit that
repeatedly restarted itself and in other ways behaved strangely (from
when i bought it new). Thinking that it was an OS issue i waited for
an update to come out. I then forgot about the whole thing (since i
very rarely used it anyway) but 5 years later, i contacted their
support dep. and was told to make sure that the OS chips were seated
properly. I opened her up and found to my surprise that they were not
seated all the way so i pressed them down into their sockets.

Ta-daaaa. Never a glitch since then.

Do check it. Just be careful and you will be ok.

Kind regards

OOPS - Yes... Typo error, apologies.

Well if you can give me the contact please do. I would like to try a
new OS chip but I will also try the suggestions here in regards to the
battery adn pushing the chip in.

Leeze –

I don’t want to discourage you but really man, considering your severe
symptoms of anomaly, you’re barking up the wrong tree with the firmware
upgrade.

Back when the chip was released by Yamaha, it was only the smallest number
of users who noticed any change after installing it (including myself). The
people on this list are who I’m referring to… and they would probably be the
most vocal as well as geeky enough to explore the synth’s innards.

As Jon said, the 1.04 chip addressed a few minor bugs. I searched the
archives for you and found these previous posts:

(From Jon 2/18/07)

It's been some time since I corresponded with Yamaha Tech Support regarding
v1.04.

I inquired:

<< it's my understanding the v1.04 OS corrects an erroneous 'low voltage'
warning which
can occur prematurely and that it also corrects the audio response when
modulating the
depth, i.e., return, of delay effects. Is this correct? >>

They replied:

"Version 1.04 does correct the symptoms you described."

So, AFAIK the MIDI Start/Stop issue you've brought forth as an issue is the
third fix
addressed by v1.04. To be honest, I'd never noticed it before you mentioned
it
:-)

will now respond to MIDI start stop without having to keep you finger
pressed
down on a key. The tempo delay works without a glitching.

So the three things that OS 1.04 does is:

1. Corrects a premature low battery voltage warning
2. Corrects audio response when modulating effects
3. Corrects MIDI start/stop errors in the sequencer section

It’s not going to fix not responding to MIDI or your screen going blank.
You need to open the back of that synth and try what I told you about
re-seating chips and connectors. After all, IF you were ever able to obtain
the ROM chip, you will have to open up the synth and remove the old one
anyway… so instead of wishing and waiting why don’t you get inside there and
fix it now?
