xiosynth comparison?

xiosynth comparison?

2008-04-29 by lunadog93

Hi there,

Has anyone tried the Novation xiosynth? How does it compare to the an1x?

James

Re: [AN1x] xiosynth comparison?

I have a K-station, and an AN1x. The sound of the k-station is comparable to the Xio.
If you are looking for a good controller with direct computer connection and a decent VA sysnth built in, the Xio synth will do fine.
If you want a VA synth that sounds IMHO as good as a Nord, Virus A or a roland JP8000, the AN1x is the way to go. And is 4 octaves, great for live use.
Even if you are not a sound designer, there are so many banks available on the net, you will be able to find the sounds you need for your music. : )

i disagree,
its not about good or bad...
its about personal taste,
you like green apples ? i dont, too sour for my taste
i like mustard!, you dont?
you like tb303? i sold mine becouse i was not 100% happy,
to me Yamaha PLG150-AN recreates/emulates the same tb-303 sound, or one i like even more, i only miss the slow knobs,
anyway, i like more the D-50 recreating a tb303, than the actual tb303 sound,
personal taste,
simple as that....

reading the access virus powercore manual its awesome, but when i listen the virus i dont like it, i only like 2 or 3 sounds in all the libraries! not crazy about it
its just personal taste
what does that mean?

that i think the waveforms sound is more important than the filter sound, opposite to most others may think,
becouse a bad sounding filter can be recreated later in signal chain with another external filter, like audiodamage dr.device, bassementarts franticfilter, korg ms20fx, sonic core interpole, sonicprojects.ch opx, sonictimeworks eq1, etc... but oscillator waveforms cannot
thats why is so faouse the yamaha DX100/7/etc.. sound + mutonix mutator

something like rebirth 338 v2.01 the tb303 + the PatternControlledFilter
sometimes it sounds like a whole new tb303

just listen the waveforn diference, some are SAME PACHES on diferent synths:
Novation A/V/K waveforms:

vs.
Steinberg A1 waveforms & ring mod. "waldorf vsti made for steinberg nuendo" i like the chorus & ringmod a lot!
http://www.vengeance-storage.com/www.vengeance-sound.de%20-%20A1%20Soundset%20by%20Manuel%20Schleis.mp3
vs.
Oddity waveforms "oddity is a digital ver. of arp oddisey an arp oddisey is a fixed & smaller "portable" version of arp2600"

vs.

vs.
Access Virus Access Virus a/b/c/rack/PoCo/TDM/Indigo/TI

etc...
http://www.vengeance-sound.de/eng/indexFLASH.html

vanguard, nexus, quasimidi polymorph, cakewalk raptor, zeta, etc..
are sampled based oscillators
but sampled based osc. sound also diferent
becouse how the samples were made , what AD was used, what wordclock, etc..
not all arp sounds the same, etc...not all korg ms20 sound the same, etc...
some record to tape first, some dont, what tape was used, etc...
becouse the Sample playback engine quality
.search &...listen tape808 samples and you will hear every VSTi/DXi/Rewire sampler sounds diferent with same samples!
etc...

i disagree on novation not as good as yamaha, it is just diferent
A=K=V
B not= V
dont know about X or Xio
but Xio if it a has 32 waveforms it means its probably sample based Osc. = diferent than A/K/V sound
but probably similar to B with 10 note polyphony

V-Station has 3x poly pure digital Oscillator waveform generator = it sounds diferent
B-Staton has 2x sampled Osc. mono waveform generator from Roland tb-303 samples or similar sh-101 or juno-60 etc...,
make same patch in both, same everything it will sound diferent <--------

V-Station cannot make B-Station sounds and backwards, waveforms are totally diferent
pure digital Square is not analog Square from roland or korg or oberheim
Saw its not Saw, etc...

X-station has Multi-effects Processor
A total of 6 effects per channel can be applied simultaneously to the onboard synthesizer and/or audio input(s)
K has vocoder,
V has no audio input, no vocoder :(
dont know if Xio has that. <-------------------- = read the manual .pdf

on the other hand.....
Yamaha Analog Physical Modeling has 2x digital pure digital waveform generator "VirtualAnalog VCOscillators"
with EDGE & velocity knobs that makes them sound not pure digital = it emulates the slew rate in some moog & roland oscillaor generator easy!, but also has its own unique sounds similar to prophet5
also yamaha has multi saw, that is a similar Yamaha version of roland super saw
or Roland Supersaw is a verson of Yamaha MultiSaw,
anyway,, its not about who made it first
its about personal taste

to me Yamaha AN its a 2osc. poly mix/blend between Prophet5, Moog & Roland
with added features like ring modulator & feedback from arp2600 probably! or a moog or emu modular that has a ringmod.

Novation V/K vengenace patches sound great but are not retro! will never sound retro becouse the oscillaors are too pure!
Korg Legacy AE2007 Polysix has a super nice retro square waveform, for my taste...
but the trend in global music , groups like justice, does not sound retro to me

from novation:
http://www.novationmusic.com/products/midi_control/xio/
Xio is the only Novation synthesiser to feature the X-Gator patch programmer. The X-Gator can be made to gate each patch to create unique 16-32 step rhythmic patterns for every onboard sound, all automatically synchronised to MIDI clock from a sequencer; just press and hold one key to groove along to a track with style. A display shows clearly the position and volume of each and every step

For approximately the same amount of money, try to find a good 2nd hand AN1x!
I never played the Xio Synth, just heard demo sounds, it does not sound bad, but it's not awesome ... one pro: it is smaller and lighter than our favorite instrument, this can be useful for carrying it out for gigs. IMO previous Novation synths were better, but more expensive.
Cheers

Great stuff! Thanks for both of your comments. It sounds like you are
both agreed the an1x sounds more like older analogue synths than the
novation stuff.. Looks like I might need to buy a novation synth too
if I need that modern sounding bite!! But for now I am really enjoying
the an1x - particularly the keyboard, which being used to a relatively
cheap midi controller up until now, seems really amazingly good.

From what I've read from other people, the Novation synths (at least
the Supernova) have or had issues with how the 'analogue' sound is
modelled. Things like aliasing and stuff. So do check that sound before
you buy.

Re: [AN1x] xiosynth comparison?

My first synth was an A-Station that I got in 2002 and an AN200 that
year too. Last July I got a Xiosynth so I've compared the Novations
pretty closely and am fairly familiar with the AN sound too: The
Xiosynth traces its lineage back to the A-station/K-Station but it's
more similar to the KS4/KS5 sound-engine-wise. I think the Xiosynth
sounds noticeably different than the A-Station. The Xiosynth can get
grittier thanks to the filter shape parameter but to my ear it also
can get smoother as well E.g. there's a pad called "The Mellow One"
and "80's Pad 1" that are the basic 80's warm pad sounds done very
well...nice chorusy and mellifluous. I tried and tried but could never
quite get a similar pad to sound just right on my A-Station. That
might be partially due to my programming deficiencies but I can also
tell there is a sound quality to it on the Xio that just isn't there
on the A-Station. The Xiosynth adds almost everything that I had
wished the A-Station. It sounds different enough from the AN200 that
it probably wouldn't be too redundant to have both especially
considering the prices of both being so affordable. They Xio and AN
sound good me! :)
