Are you using a Mac or PC? What type of MIDI Interface? Are you performing a bulk transfer
or one sound at a time? Are you initiating the transfer from AN1xEdit or are you trying to
initiate the dump from the AN1x front panel controls?

Im using a PC

trying to send 1 individual sound to the Yamaha AN1X editor for
editing.

I'm pressing the request button on the editor, to transfer to sound
to it, however it comes up with 'recieve error'

Im using a MIDI in MIDI out cable directly to the AN1X

A Joystick Port MIDI Cable? You hopefully connected MIDI-IN with
Cable-Out and Cable-In with With MIDI Out?

Just out of curiosity... did you select the correct midi channels on the
AN1x and on your PC?

Can you retrieve sounds from the AN1x, instead of just editing stuff
straight from the editor? (I may have missed a bit of workflow, pardon
me if that has come up already)

I know I had some trouble getting my AN1x to listen to midi and send
midi.. had to switch of Local (but that was for getting it to make sound
coming from a midi sequencer in a GNU/Linux environment).

Cheers,

Gerarlds suggestions are very practical - double check the MIDI In & Out cables are
connected to the correct ports and the MIDI Channels correspond as suggested.

Are you using the latest drivers for the MIDI Interface? I think you mentioned it was a USB
MIDI Interface - have you tired it with the MIDI Interface plugged into another USB port or
bus?

USB MIDI Interfaces have a history of inadequate performance with the AN1x and AN1xEdit
- primarily due to the size of the SysEx dump the AN1x transmits and the lack of any
error checking in the USB protocol. Some work more reliably than others. You might have
to experiment with your settings.

Have you tried a simple SysEx bulk dump utility? If you have a MIDI Sequencer you try to
use that. MIDIOX was a popular, stand alone utility amongst Windows users:

Perhaps you might try a send and receive with MIDIOX. Some utilities will allow you to
manually set the SysEx buffer size or the Receive timeout value.

Yes im using the latest drivers, i have tried different ports, and im
certain i have the lead connected absolutely fine.

i think the simplest solution is just for me to save all my effects
on pc, and only send them one way..

That works too ;-)

Sorry there is no cut & dry solution to this problem, but it's not new and you're not the
only user to experience it (small comfort, I know... )

And as suggested, you can always try a bulk or single voice dump into a generic SysEx
librarian or a MIDI Sequencer. Assuming you're using a desktop machine, you could
always invest in an an inexpensive serial port MIDI Interface which have always fared better
with the AN1x + AN1xEdit.
