Hello Chris!
welcome to the club!
I think you've made a good choice, it's an under rated but very interesting instrument. I have some other synths, and never regret to have bought this one. OK, it was for a bargain price (they're cheaper in France than in the US), but it's a damn good machine however. Many "virtual analog" are more "user friendly", but for 2 or 3 times the price second hand, and I.M.O. don't sound 2 or 3 times better!
Cheers
J.F.

Congratulations

I have a lot of Yamaha gear including the AN1x, and it's a great
synth. My only non Yamaha piece of hardware is Nord G2 engine, which
is awesome, but I still wouldn't part with my AN1x as it has a
character of its own.

I'm sure that you'll enjoy it!

Cheers
Derek

Thanks guys for the well wishes...I've kept my eyes out for an AN1X
for a while now and when this came up in mint condition I could'nt
let it go....my other Yamaha gear consists of a PLG150AN card and a
VL card in my Motif ES6 and a CS2X,I use the CS2X on top of my
Hammond XK-3 to cover wurlitzer piano sounds in a country rock gig.It
works great and is so light to sit on top of the organ.I also have a
S90 for piano and Rhodes duties.
Other retro gear consists of B3 and C3 and M102 Hammonds all with
leslies,2x200a Wurlitzers,a Clavinet,Korg Poly6 and a very old
Minikorg 700 synth. Its taken me a few years to build up my
collection of keyboards and I sure the AN1X will fit in nicely with
the rest of this lot.At this point I better thank a very
understanding wife who has to put up with this lot (and
me) ......4 days and counting....bring it on! ---

Nice setup

In addition to my AN1x, I have an EX5, SY77, FS1R, Motif ES Rack (with
PLG150-AN), A4000 and then the Nord G2 Engine. I think that lot covers
most of the bases! :-)

Likewise the good lady is very understanding, although she refuses to
dust in my toy room! I guess that is a small price to pay....

Got that right Derek....the funny thing my wife who I met 10 years
ago did'nt even know I was a musician let alone what a B3 Hammond was
or a analog synth...now she knows more than me I'm sure...says to me
when we're in the car driving with a cd on...."did you hear the clav
in that"...gotta love that....she said if anything ever happenned to
me (God Forbid)...they'll be no bargains here for anyone thinking she
knows nothing and can rip her off for a deal on some of the old
stuff...you have been warned..ha ha...still waiting for the AN1X to
turn up ....hopefully tuesday...get a full report soon as I have a
play....I've been downloading sounds ready for it.....even got a
photo as my background on the pc...its ok, I will get over
it......does it have 128 preset patches and 128 user patches or just
128 user patches that you write over?

Hey, Chris

You've done much better than me: I've gotten my wife away from an
awful taste in music when I first met her to listening to the decent
stuff, but she still doesn't know her rhodes from her wurlies or her
Moogs from her arps!

Strangely enough for a synth of its era, the AN1x has no preset banks,
just 128 user patches.

Cheers
Derek

What a good idea!!
Another synth of mine (Evolution EVS1) has 80 ROM presets and only 20 user patches... Why keep it? It is a rare machine, it can do a lot of things (FM, additive and phase distorsion synthesis, very complete MIDI implementation) and the second hand price is nearly 0... Being a 1U rack it is not very bulky.

[AN1x] Re: Can't wait

2008-02-22 by derek192603

It's a shame that such an interesting sounding machine only has 20
patches.

Most of my Yamaha machines are from around the AN1x era (an era when I
think they were making really interesting "deep" machines and not the
ROMPLERS that they do now), and it just intrigued me that there were
no presets on the AN1x compared to my EX5 and FS1R, which are full of
them. Of course I'd prefer all the ROM patches on those two to have
been over writable, but you can't have everything.

Cheers
Derek

The thing that strikes me about Yamaha synths from that era is that they
were quite buggy. There is something to be said for stuff that actually
*works*. You have an EX5, you know what I'm talking about. Beautiful
machine, but severely flawed.

The newest Motifs have a Linux-based operating system and you can
actually download the source code of your synth.

Hi, Pete

Now there's a name from the past. How are you doing?

You're quite right, the EX5 is buggy and a bit of a flawed diamond,
but I still prefer this machine compared to the Motif ES Rack that I
also have. Don't get me wrong, the Motif ES is a nice machine and I
use it mainly for strings and organs, but the EX5 can still kick butt
despite some of its limitations, and is a much deeper machine in terms
of programming capability. I've still yet to hear a machine come up
with layered pads as good as the EX can do! Also, whilst the EX5 does
have known problems, it's still rock solid in the way that I use it.
The only two things that frustrate me are the MIDI SYSEX bugs (which I
coded around in ex.factory) and the two parts on the keyboard
limitation in Performance mode.

I'm intrigued by Yamaha making their Motif XS stuff available for
download.

Back on topic, I've never seen any bug issues with the AN1x?

Hi!
"> Back on topic, I've never seen any bug issues with the AN1x?"

Don't be afraid by the sometimes flashing LEDs, mostly the "scene" LEDs. It's a minor flaw that has no effect on sound or anything else, your synth software is not crashing etc... It is neither a power supply problem, with the stock one or any equivalent aftermarket it's the same story.
