An1x rack mount equivalent?

An1x rack mount equivalent?

2008-02-03 by XOIO

Hi All,
Am new here, however i USED to own an AN1X & thought it was fantastic.
Had to sell due to a house move.
I'm building up my studio again, but was wondering, What if anything
has Yamaha brought out (past or present) that would qualify as a RACK
MOUNTED version of the AN1x - i.e., a Virtual Analogue synth, with
similar or better than An1x capabilities?

Look forward to your answers
Cheers
Al

The closest you can get is the Kenton Plugstation filled with
PLG-150AN cards. It'll fit four. The problem is that it wasn't
particularly well-received when it came out, so it's hard to find.
The upside is that if you do actually manage to find one, it shouldn't
be too much money.

For the trouble, you might just be better off getting an AN200 and
fashioning rack ears for it.

The rack mount version of the CS6x, (a CS6r??) with an PLG-AN150 card gets you to the equivalent of a 5 voice AN1x....with a little more money invested but the CS6x is a great rompler synth....

That's a bugger.

Apparently, they did develop a rack-mounted AN1x (the AN1r), but it was
cancelled just before commercial launch. Don't ask me why.

Apart from the AN-200 and the PLG cards, the rack-mounted EX5R has
limited AN capability (2 voice, or 1 voice if you put it in dual mode.
It's also 3U high, just slightly shorter than it is wide (19"), and one
beast of a synth. But it's stretching it a bit to count as what you're
looking for.

Hello!
first sorry for my messages, i'm not at home, just somewhere in Spain for work with a borrowed laptop...
Some Yamaha racks (Motif or maybe CS6) have slots for PLG cards, but they're fairly expensive. The better solution would be the Kenton rack, assuming you can find one.
A guy of the list had tried to put an AN200 in a 19" rack. I think it's possible, the simplest way is to fix 2 "ears" on both sides of the case, but an issue may come with the
height of the AN200 which is probably not "standard".
Cheers
JF.

A bigger problem would be that the thing isn't 19" wide. Just rack ears
wouldn't be enough.

Hi Peter!
of course you have to do it yourself, standard rack mount kits don't have the right dimensions.
The "less bad" solution would be:
1) get a blank 19" plate, those sold to close unused space in a rack tower. They're cheap and easily available in any electronics or P.A. store in many dimensions (1U -> 6u at least). You have to leave enough room for the MIDI and supply connectors of course, don't forget them when you'll buy your plate! I never saw 90° MIDI connectors, what an error, i think there is a need for such ones, but no manufacturer had the idea...
2) cut out a rectangular window at the right size, slightly larger than the AN200 control panel, and fix the AN200 on the rear side of the 19" plate. I've done such things to put "non 19" standard" electronic equipment in racks towers for my job. OK you'll have to drill some holes, cut and fold some metal sheets but it is possible and not too difficult even at home. The AN200 is very light, it's not a computer UC or some test equipment, there is no need to make very rugged fixtures.
