Can AN1x send MIDI CC#40?

Can AN1x send MIDI CC#40?

2007-12-17 by supercockfighter

I'm controlling a Creamware Minimax via my AN1x, and I'm trying to
figure out if I can use a foot controller plugged into the AN1x to
control Filter Cutoff on the Minimax (since the Minimax, sadly, lacks
a foot controller input of its own). If the foot controller is set to
control the filter cutoff on the AN1x, it looks like it transmits this
on CC#30. But filter cutoff on the Minimax is CC#40.

Under "Control Change Modes" in the AN1x Data List book CC#40 is
blank. Does this mean the AN1x doesn't transmit CC#40.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, my MIDI knowledge is still in the
extreme novice stage.

Thanks,
Joshua

Hello Joshua,

MIDI CC assignments for real time controllers are made under the UTILITY/SETUP menu.

1. Set the ASSIGN Knob to Utility/Setup.

2. Use the Ctrl Device button to scroll through the options until you see FC in the display.

3. Use the adjacent button, Ctrl No, to increment the assigned MIDI CC value to 40.

4. Make certain your Creamware Minimax is set to receive on the same MIDI Channel the
AN1x is set to transmit on, i.e. CH 1 <-> Ch 1

Be aware the settings you make to Ctrl Device and Ctrl No are global assignment and as
such, the AN1x will also respond *if* you have made an assignment in the Ctrl Matrix
(found under the SCENE/SCENE SETUP menu) for either/or the FC or MIDI CC #40.

Regards,

Jon

I actually sat down with them both last night, re-read that part of
the manual, and got it working. Hooray for foot-controlled filter
sweeps. Then today I ran my guitar into the Audio In on the Minimax
while using the Foot Controller; tons of fun.

Thanks,
Joshua

Hello Josh!
i'm glad that you can do what you wanted to do..
What's your opinion on the Minimax? Nice ?
Cheers!

[AN1x] Re: Can AN1x send MIDI CC#40?

The Minimax is pretty nice(I got mine when Nova Musik had them on sale
for $600, I'm not sure I'd buy it for the $800 they're listing at
now), I've never played a real Mini to compare it to, but I did have a
Moog Source for a while and I think the Minimax stacks up favorably
against it.

Biggest drawback is that despite supposedly having 12-note polyphony
the Minimax will get stuck notes really easily if you send it too much
at once (don't know if it's a problem with how they implemented the
polyphony or a problem with the MIDI in general). For instance,
controlling it from the AN1x, if I have the AN1x's sequencer going
then try to play individual notes over top of it the Minimax will
start hanging notes. Without the sequencer going, you can play as many
notes as you like no problem. Also, any attempt to use the AN1x's
arpeggiator will send the Minimax into a stuck-note frenzy. By
contrast, using the AN1x the exact same way to control my old CZ-1000
or my SCI Prophet-600 (probably the most primitive MIDI spec you can
get) I don't have any of these problems. These problems might be
correctable with a firmware upgrade, but the status of
Creamware/SonicCore and the extent to which they will continue to
support the ASB product line seems pretty hazy right now.

So if you just think of the Minimax as a monosynth that can do poly in
very limited, specific way then it's a pretty cool synth.
