I just picked this classic up for a song, now I need to learn how to use it...

2007-03-10 by captain.moloney

Hello all,

I am new to this forum and new to the AN1x. I know how powerful it is
from all of the reviews that I've read. My real purpose for buying
this board is to use it in live performances with my band. I just
turned 40 in January and was begged to play keyboard again after a 15
year hiatus.

With that being said, I am looking for a mentor on this forum who I
can start an effective dialog with. Someone who has used the AN1x in
a live setting and preferably someone who is familiar with 70s & 80s
music from artists such as The Doors, The Allman Brothers, Van Halen,
REO, Journey, Foreigner, Whitesnake, etc. But I understand that I
can't always have it all so if I could just correspond with someone,
male or female, who knows what this keyboard can and can't do, I
would greatly appreciate it if that person would contact me.

Thanks a million,

Cheers,

Kevin

Hi Kevin and welcome! :-)

The AN1X isn't the best at Hammond/Rhodes type stuff but if you want 80's synth sounds then its a top buy and the keyboard is about as good as none weighted keyboards get (better than a K2000 imho).
Try some of the user patches in the file section of this group and download the free software editor from Yamaha as the AN1x interface is its Achilles heel.

have fun ;-)

Rob.

I think you'd be best served my simply posting your question(s) to AN1x-list as a whole -
there's no telling where the most helpful answer might come from :-)

Re: siren help for REO Speedwagon's Ridin' the Storm Out"

2007-03-10 by captain.moloney

Okay Jon, here's one for ya.

I want to make the siren sound at the beginning and the end of the
song Ridin' the storm out by REO Speedwagon.

It starts out with a low siren tone and sustains for a few secs. and
then the siren gradually progresses to a high tone and sustains for a
second or two and dips slightly lower again and then fades.

Would I do this by using the wheel or maybe a pedal or preferably a
preset internal delay and progression. Can anyone tell me how to
duplicate this siren on the AN1x? I would prefer that someone
download the song or I can email the MP3. I want it to be right on.
By the way, the band keys everything down one octave.

Can the AN1x be programmed to do the graduations in pitch and
sustains automatically or would I need to use a pedal or wheel to
perform this sound manually in a live setting? It would be nice to be
able to just push a button and have it play. But again, I don't know
what this synth can and cannot do. If it can't be programmed, I just
need to know the settings on the AN1x and I'll control the pitch and
sustain using the wheel or a pedal. Thanks in advance for any help I
can get.

Also, I would be more than happy to donate a small fee for any help I
can get. Maybe $5 per song that I can get the settings for.

Cheers,

Kevin

It was probably played directly on the keyboard(Minimoog?) with a
slow portamento(glide) time. Try this: Oscs: 2 saw, 1 octave apart,
slightly detuned, edge reduced a bit from full. Mixer: both oscs 100%
and a bit of feedback. Filter: LPF24db, nearly wide open, a bit of
rez, keytrack 0, FEG depth 0. AEG: medium release time. Key mode:
Legato. Portamento: On and set to a fairly long time. Optional: Unison
mode with a detune of around 5. Not sure how close this is, as I
haven't heard that song in a long time...should be in the ballpark
though... -Steve
