Only one knob can move at a time?

Only one knob can move at a time?

2007-02-08 by ras_mynameisnottaken

Hello,

The 8 knobs on my AN1x, when more than one is moved at a time, will
studder the MIDI CC data instead of sending a smooth stream. For
example:

I've been trying to use the AN1x as a controller to control a software
filter. I have Assign 1 controlling the resonance, and Assign 2
controlling the cutoff. When I move both knobs at the smae time, the
midi data from each knob fights with each other. If I view the data
in real time with my sequencer I can see that the flow of CC data
becomes chunky. This does not happen when I move the modwheel with
the pitch weel and ONE knob all at the same time. It appears to me
that the 8 knobs on the AN1x can only output midi data one at a time,
or else you get a skip effect happening.

Is there a mode that will allow the knobs to send MIDI data at them
same time?

Thanks for your help!

This is kinda a weak spot with the AN1x however if you assign the parameters in the mod matrix that you want to tweak to the 8 knobs in the (brown) control mode then I think it works fine this way however I'm not sure if the 8 knobs in control mode will output a steady MIDI CC for recording.
Perhaps use an external MIDI device with the MIDI through on your host sequencer to control the parameters might help.

I'll have a tweak on mine later tonight and try to find any more work arounds.

Thanks for the reply.
I was hoping to use my AN1x as a control surface for som VST soft
sythns, but not being able to move more than one knob at a time
without MIDI CC skips won't give me the results I am after. Looks
like I'll have to spend the money on a new controller.... I am
surprised this has not been pointed out much before (I did quite a
bit of searching on the web and found nothing).

Thanks!
Ras

Re: [AN1x] Only one knob can move at a time?

2007-02-09 by Jeff

Don't be disappointed....
But it is basically an instrument with some control keyboard features,
and at least you'll have one hand on the keyboard when the other one is
moving some knob, during a solo part for example... What you are looking
for is much more like a Doepfer or Bit Stream controller with a lot of
knobs, pads and pots and no keys . There are sometimes such unespected
things : my Red Sound expander allows me to filter a lot of incoming
MIDI data (after touch, velocity, mod wheel ...) except one, "program
change" .... This is rather curious on something designed to work
together with another synth !
For your problems have you tried to put your AN1X in "local off" mode ?
OK, you will loose the AN1X sounds, but maybe control more easily
another one ...
Cheers
J.F.

Heh, or build yer own! http://www.ucapps.de -> midibox!!

(I'm looking into ways to build myself a midibox sid :D with some spare
c64s on the attic, hmm it is a bit of a blasphemy to abuse the holy c64
in such a way, but hmmz, well, as long is a have spareparts to keep my
two c64's working, it's good :P)

Cheers :)

Yes, I can see how the current use of MIDI controller data is much
more than when the AN1x was designed. It would have been a nice
touch but hey... I just went up and picked up a Midi box for cheap
so its not that big a deal... I just wanted to make sure there
wasn't a special mode or something I could use before spending
money. So thanks for the repies!

The An1X still makes a good master keyboard, If you link it with a MIDI knob bank (like the Doepfer Drehbank) that has MIDI merge then you get an awesome sequencer and MIDI control surface.

Rob.
