Forget that idea! AN delivers good va (analogic) sounds and that's its
aim and that's it! Maybe u could approach some kind of FM tones via
cross-modulation but it will never sound as rafined as a classic DX.
As to acoustic piano, only rompling technique (with numerous Gigabytes
of samples) is able to pseudo recreate the complexity instrument.

2 things :
the piano is (with the violin) one of the trickiest instruments to
emulate with electronics.
the AN1X is a modern "reissue"* of old time analog synths dedicated
mostly to sound research, more than realistic imitation of existing
instruments.
This said, you have a good *electric* piano in the factory presets ,
it's called "Whitney E.P." . If you're looking for an acoustic piano
sound the better way is to get a dedicated expander (Alesis or Kurzweil,
i know both but you can find others) plugged in your AN1X. Or with more
room and money, buy an electronic piano with sampled sounds , 88
weighted keys and so on ....

*Soundwise, yes, but on an electronic point of view, no. It is "virtual
analog" , i.e. the analog circuits of yesterdays are replaced by DSP
based sound generation with real time controls .

Good sir,
If you want a good piano sound from a yamaha
( korg M1 piano, Alesis Grand )go with a CS6x. As others have said here,
the AN200 is a VA synth recreating the sounds of the anolog beasts of
yore ( I have an AN1x and a CS6x.)
The CS6x has some great pianos, and you can pick one up off ebay
cheap, well worth the investment! Good luck :)

those who did sincerly try to help me out, your advice is appreciated, and some of your
suggestions will be put to use...

I'd like to explain a little more the reasons behind my question...I use a tiny keyboard set-
up live...just an oxygen and an AN200...now I've been able to do without adding more gear
...(I switch between guitar and keys all the time)...but I'd like to add just a simple piano
sound...the sonic possibilties of the AN200 must surely be able to 'fake' a realistic
sounding piano sound...surely there must be some geniuses out there that could help me
out instead of berating me...I realise fully that the AN200 is a virtual analog type of
machine...DUH!...that's the reason I bought it!...but I'm sure I can push the envelope (no
oun intended) and find a piano sound that could somehow approach what I'm looking for

You seem to have missed the point behind the humor. The AN1x is unsuited to emulating a
realistic, acoustic piano. This is a limitation of the VA technology, not a matter or hubris or
disinterest in your goal.

You CAN arrive at a serviceable rendition of Rhodes and other digital emulations - and, as
Jimmy suggested, there are many examples of such efforts in the Voices directory of the Files
section for AN1x-list here at Yahoo! Groups.

With practice, you might arrive at a facsimile of an analog 'piano' type sound, but it will not
be a convincing replica of an acoustice piano. This is best suited for a ROMpler or sampler -
to insist otherwise is unproductive at best, naive at worst.

OK, set your VCA envelope with a short attack, a long decay, no sustain
and a shorter release. That's the most important and the easier to
imitate. The filter envelope has less importance , try the same or
something simpler (attack -sustain- release and keep the release longer
than the VCA) . Tweak the key follow for the VCF to get slightly less
filtering on the bass side . For the waveform you can use sawtooth or
pulse . Both oscillators should be slightly detuned , because the 2 or 3
strings on an acoustic piano are not accurately tuned . For the effects
: a small amount of chorus to thicken the sound and maybe a slight PWM
on pulse around the "good" (according to your taste) duty cycle .Add
reverb to your taste. Of course velocity is an important parameter for
both VCA and VCF .
Try it and let us know .... I've tried something like that on another
synth (Casio CZ) .
