Faulty black key

Faulty black key

2006-09-24 by mtbis1

I have a black key on my AN1x keyboard which does not work (B minor I
think - I'm a guitarist so forgive me!, every other key works
perfectly. I have taken the keyboard aprat and everything looks fine,
rubber carbon contacts and pressure pads all fine - what could be
causing this?

Hi !
only one key or all the 5 "B" keys of the keyboard ?
Only one : it is a loose contact problem .
All the similar keys : it is in the electronics , the key contacts form
a matrix scanned by a controller IC . In this case check if all the
ribbon cables, sockets , wires ... from the keyboard are firmly in their
respective socket .
Cheers!

Hi Jeff,

It is only 1 key out of 61, I've had the keyboard
apart (this AN1X has hardly been used) stripped down
the rubber membrane, seems like new, checked all
ribbon cables, all look fine, checked middle section
of keyboard diodes on keyboard PCB with a multimeter,
all check Ok, I'm baffled by this...all other keys
work pefectly, the key depresses fine. The next thing
I guess I can do is strip it down again and manaully
apply pressure to the rubberised carbon contact strip
and see if it work then - this real odd.

Good idea!
and if you have a multimeter you can check if the contact closes or not
. Because of the carbon contacts it could not be zero but .... Compare
with another good key contact . These rubber contacts are often a
failure cause.
Good luck !

Re: [AN1x] Faulty black key

I'm wondering if there is something else faulty, when
I press a key should I hear several steps in volume?
I.E. is the keyboard velocity sensitive? At the moment
I it doesn't make any difference how hard a press the
keys, the volume is 1 step - the exception being the 1
faulty key, which has no sound at all!

Also, does it have aftertouch?

I'm thinking maybe a IC has gone or something.

Yes ! But you can find some patches not using the velocity of the
keyboard : organs, a lot of classic synths sounds (most of the vintage
machines were not velocity sensitive)

Yes too ! But , as the key velocity, it can be disabled by editing the
patch .
