Using a foot for scene switching?

Using a foot for scene switching?

2006-09-14 by lou.kadassy

Hi there everybody. I just got an AN1x - great machine! But you
already know that, huh?

I'm programming sounds for a live gig. Since I hate switching voices
while playing live, I programmed two scenes for each voice with
dramatically different sound - exactly what I need for perfomance.
While programming, I kept switching between the two scenes using the
scene buttons, and on some voices I used the mod wheel to perform
different tasks, from modulation to effect balance.

I thought it would be easy to use a footswitch to, ahem, "switch"
between scenes, but I haven't been able to do that.

My question is: can I use a foot switch (or continuous foot
controller, aka volume pedal) to switch between scene 1/2? I don't
want to morph, I just need to switch.

Any help would be appreciated.

Lou

Yes, to both.

On the AN1x, set the [EDIT ROTARY] Knob to the UTILITY/SETUP menu.

Press Ctrl Device until you see FS displayed.

Press Ctrl No to change the value to 3: SceneSel

Press Ctrl Device until you see SCENE displayed, the Ctrl No value should also be 3:
SceneSel. If it's not, press Ctrl No to change the value to 3: SceneSel.

Play your sound, presee the Foot Switch (FS) to hear the 2nd Scene, release to hear the 1st
Scene. There is no Morphing invoked when using FS.

Repeat the above procedure for using a Foot Controller (FC). Obviously, Morphing can be
used with FC and you can have both FS and FC available simultaneously. Might get
confusing if you use the AN1x as a Master Control Keyboard ;-)

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Jon

Jon,
many thanks for your response.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work as I expected. Did all the steps but
when I press the switch *both* scene lights go on and I listen to a
mix between the two.
I'm using an "on/off" switch, maybe a temporary one (sustain pedal
type) will do the trick?

Thanks again,
Lou

Hello Lou !
do you have the user manual? If not, according to page 96 you can assign
a controller to the "scene control" :

   1. turn the matrix knob to the lower row of buttons (UTILITY - SETUP)
   2. press "device" up or down and select "scene"
   3. press "ctrl n\ufffd" to select a control change number to control "scene"
   4. press "device" again to select the controller you want to use (
for you : FS = foot switch or FC = foot controller . N.B. FV= Foot
Volume, it is not the same pedal !)
   5. press "ctrl n\ufffd" again to select the same control change number as
      in 3
   6. Done ! Don't forget to store it if it works .... the word "EDIT"
will be displayed on the screen, so do as you do to store a sound.

To be honest i never tested this setting !
A continuous controller such as "FC" would "morph" the sound between the
2 scenes, a "on/off" controller such as "FS" would toggle between the
scenes (or maybe swap scenes, the manual is not very clear on this point
....) . The foot control and the mod wheel are similar, so if it works
with the mod wheel it will work with FC. I use to "morph" between 2
organ sounds , it can sound like if you were using the drawbars of a
real organ.... depending on how are the 2 different "scenes" .
Cheers!
J.F.

YES ! OF COURSE ! Because the hardware inside your synth is "waiting
for" an edge (transition between the "1" and "0" state or the opposite)
, not a logic level (1 or 0) to toggle between the 2 scenes . Take a
look at all the buttons on the front panel : they are all momentary
switches .

[AN1x] Re: Using a foot for scene switching?

2006-09-14 by lou.kadassy

I'm not sure it will work (I've not tried yet because I don't have a
momentary switch handy). However, the transition you're talking about
should still take place when I change the switch state from ON to OFF:
I chose an on/off switch simply because I don't want to keep a pedal
pressed all the time.

I tried assigning MW to SceneSel and I noticed that when the MW is at
zero the first scene gets selected, moving it about halfway selects
the second scene and moving it all the way up selects both scenes. So
I suspect that a continuous controller (and a certain amount of foot
dexterity) might be necessary.
Anyone has first-hand experience on this?

Thanks very much for your help,
Lou

It works just fine here.

Select both Scene switches so they are active and try again. Make certain the Layer value
for your Voice is Single. I'm using a Yamaha FC-5 Square Style Foot Switch Normally
Closed.

Hello Lou !
when i assign the mod wheel as i've described previously the sounds
changes "continuously" between both scenes . It's like having a balance
pot . Of course when the wheel is fully up or down you will hear only
scene 1 or scene 2 ; a foot pedal will do the same . Scene select must
be done by a simple push button , just as the switches on the front panel .

You're right, Jon! It works beautifully.

The only downside is that *both* scene lights are lit all the time so
I can't tell which one is selected.
Probably a momentary switch (as you suggested earlier) is a good idea
after all. Push for scene 2, release for scene 1.

Thanks to everybody for their help,
Lou

Great, glad it works for you.

Yeah, I picked up on that too :-/

I *think* the pri vs. sec scene can be predetermined by the order in
which the scenes switches are selected - not certain, didn't have
enough time to work that out yet. And I didn't try stepping through
consecutive Voices either, but it shouldn't be an issue as the
scenes are saved at the Voice level.

Hi Lou !
i don't think so ... push for one scene , push again for the other one ,
and probably a third push on this (censored :-) ) pedal switch will turn
on both scenes . Be careful with the "layer" mode ... try the first time
with "single" sounds .
I hope that it helps ...

The FS is sending MIDI CC #003 with a value of '0' or '127' to swap Scenes; The FC is
sending MIDI CC #003 with the full range of values from 0-127, i.e., Scene Morphing.
There is no third value when using a FS - aside from kicking and stomping when it doesn't
work as expected :-P

The Layer parameter is Voice specific. The SceneSel will work regardless of the Layer
parameter setting, but for Lou's application Single is exactly what he wants :-) Using any
other Layer mode leads to pretty extreme results - try using this with a Split Lyer and one
Scene is being arpeggiated!

Jon

Lou,

I would prescribe a $35 Yamahaha FC-7 variable pedal for relief of your
headache.
1. Works great.
2. Allows morphing between scenes.
3. It's cool.
4. It's known to work correctly because I've used one live for the last
6 years.

The morphing trick is coolest, but as in any 2 scenes chosen for
morphing, the parameters have to be correct for the morphing to be useful.

But to use it to quickly switch between scenes, just mash it all the way
down or up and there you are.
