another newbie asks for help!

another newbie asks for help!

2006-07-19 by kalin_progg

hello everyone! as a matter of fact i still don't have an1 but i saw it
in a store and after getting some info on the net i'm seriosly
concerning of bying this unit (maybe after 10days- you see i'm really
anxious about that:). well i'm affraid it's condition is pretty poor
(well, the price is about 300$)- it seems the original owner was really
expressive person:) but after all the sound is important isn't it..
so here is my question: i found out that there is 128 ready-to-use
patches, but actually i heard only a few of them. the most of the
programs was named "initial brass" or "initial electric piano". please
tell me is there a way to restore the factory patches and if no where
can i find/dowload the original set of presets of yamaha an1.
in addition of that i will appreciate any explainations of which
editor/librarian to use when loading new sounds in an1 and how exactly
to do that.
many thanks in advance for cooperation and undarstanding!!!

Turn OFF the power.
Press and hold the [7], [8] and [9] buttons down simultaneously while turning ON the
power.
Continue to hold the buttons down until a dialog box appears on the screen displaying,
'Factory Set? [1---9]'.
Release the [7], [8] and [9] buttons and choose one of the following resets by pressing the
corresponding button:
Button [1]: Loads Voices 1-64.
Button [2]: Loads Voices 65-128.
Button [3]: Loads all 128 Voices.
Button [4]: Loads all Voices sorted by Voice Category.
Button [5]: Loads User Patterns 1-64.
Button [6]: Loads User Patterns 65-128.
Button [7]: Loads all User Patterns.
Button [8]: Loads system data.
Button [9]: Loads all Voices, User Patterns and system data (full factory reset).
Press the [YES/ENTER] button. The AN1X will execute the Initialization procedure and
return to 'Play mode'.

You may want to review the FAQ. It hasn't been updated in some time, but most of it
remains accurate:

AN1xEdit is the cross-platform, freeware editor/librarian provided by Yamaha. Many of the
user contributed AN1x Voices available for download are saved as .an1 - the format
supported by AN1xEdit. It still works under Win XP and can be run within Classic under OS
X.

Good luck.

Hi there and welcome,

I believe you can find presets as well as many other voices in the Files
section of this group.

Regarding good editor/librarian, I'm using great freeware AN1xEdit v.1.1 or
1.2. (I don't remember exactly which is the last version) with WinXP Pro
without any problems. As far as I know it is also available for Mac (classic
OS). It utilizes full power of AN1x synthesis possibilies and very
straightforward to use (for me at least).

Is it available on the Web (and maybe in the Files section too):
http://www.xgfactory.com/html/down/an1xed_1.htm

Hope this help :)

Best regards,
Serg

Hello !
if you want to reset your synth (according to what you say i think it's
a good idea ...) , you have to :

   1. turn off the power
   2. press and *hold* the "7","8" and "9" buttons while you turn it on
      again
   3. the screen will then display "Factory set ?"
   4. then release all the buttons and you can choose "3" or "9" by
pressing the corresponding button . The "3" loads the 128 factory
presets and the "9" performs a full system reset (including the
presets) . There are others options (partial load of the factory
voices, sort by type ..) but i think that in your case the 3 or 9
are the most relevant options .

For the price : i don't know what are the second hand prices in US but
300$ seems to be a good price if everything is OK . If not you have to
ask for some refund , repair is possible but could be expensive. But it
is only a personal (and french) opinion ... in Europe the average price
is 250 ~ 300\ufffd .
I can send you some patches and a very useful "Voice Setup Guide" in
.pdf file . Try to get the factory handbook when buying your synth,
because programming is not obvious : the knobs and buttons have many
different functions depending on "where you are" in the "control matrix"
on the right side .
For the sounds : you can easily get good E-pianos and organs (the
factory ones are OK) , but this keyboard is much more dedicated to
re-create "vintage synths" sounds . Remember Tangerine Dream , Klaus
Schulze, E.L.P. , J.M. Jarre .... Don't expect realistic grand pianos or
cello sounds !
Have fun playing your synth, i bought mine 2 years ago and it does not
bother me after this time .
Cheers
J.F.

Thank you ,Jeff, for your good piece of advice! In 10 days i probably i will know the exact situation with this unit ( currently i'm working in South Korea but i don't live in Seul where the store selling the An1x is). Being interested in prog rock i'm sure this synth will be very useful to me. Hope all buttons and knobs work fine. About the Voice Guide List- thank you again-if i get the synth, i will mail you.
  Cheers!!!
