On some instruments the GUI indeed helps to understand the signalflow in your synth better than your hardware can. It may sound different. It may give you more voices more multitimbrality and therefor less mixdowns longer control. I do not think you're too conservative. I got lots of hardware synths here around, computers and soundcards. And though it finally looks like there is no virtual AN1x at all, I'd give it a try to find out. Not to replace the hardware because it cannot.
