I feel it more along the lines of FM with the ION.
Did you note the poly lost when you layered up to 4 deep? I been sticking to 2 deep (at once)as that seemed to work best with my ears. ;-) More than that, I just layer in Sonar. Offset or shift key there.

  patches on Ion but gave up; too many differences between the synths.
