As a result, slave osc wave becomes more complex than normal,adding harmonics to the sound. Changing pitch of master osc changes pitch of overall sound. Changing pitch of slave osc changes timbre of overall sound by altering harmonics; for example, using filter envelope to mod slave osc pitch to get that Cars "aoww" sound. I'm not sure what goes on with soft sync (Ion has both hard and soft sync,and choice of sync to osc 2 or 2+3.) Sometimes soft sync sounds like it generates harmonics an octave lower, but I'm just guessing. Between sync and FM,(and ringmod) you can get some pretty wild sounds...
