The information posted at SonicState is bogus - as is much of the
user contributed information posted on that 'site (it's almost
laughable if it weren't such a diservice.) There is no mystery
internal switch.

It's possible the author is referring to the Volume parameter found
under the VCA Knob Parameter Group. This parameter is used to
preprogram a Volume level into each scene within a Voice and can be
altered in real time using the standard MIDI CC #007 for Volume. You
can alter the value for this parameter using either the front panel
controls or AN1xEdit.

It's easy to imagaine a scenario where improper gain staging, i.e.,
poor use of the AN1x internal signal chain and effects, can result in
an unsatisfactory output level. I would sugget you reinitialize your
AN1x to the factory settings and procede from there: Power off your
AN1x. Hold down the '7', '8', & '9' buttons simultaneously, power on
the AN1x. Following the 'Welcome' messages you should receive a
Prompt 'Fact Set? [1-9]' - select 9 for 'all' and reply Yes. Your
AN1x should be reset to the default factory settings.

There were a number of early AN1x models which exhibited an
unusual 'popping and clicking' sound - Yamaha long since acknowledged
the problem and provided a factory modification which corrected the
audible distortion. It's conceivable - if unlikely - that five years
later an AN1x model that exhibited this flaw and went unserviced
might have deteriorated further and now exhibits more pronounced
problems - such as a reduction in volume. This is a bit of a stretch,
IMO, but you never know...

I used my old AKG 240 headphones (600 Ohm imepdance) plugged into the
headphone jack of my AN1x and while the output was not as 'hot' as
the headphone jack of my Mackie 1202 it was perfectly usable in a
home 'studio' environment.

regards,

Jon
