Love them MX8s.  I used to have 2 in my rack (totaled 12 ins, 16 outs) as
master routing and control for the entire band's synths.  We've since
divided them up amongst 2 of us.  But as for control and massaging the MIDI
data stream - they're excellent.  You can filter a lot of stuff (aftertouch
as well as many others), change a lot of stuff (shift channels), and even
produce some interesting effects (like switching synths via velocity - IOW
if you hit the keys harder you'll be playing another synth).  All this
besides its main purpose - to route MIDI inputs to your various synths.  At
one time we had something like 9 controllers routed to 10 or so sound
sources.  It was cool, but a bit unnecessary in the long run.  It was just
cool that it actually worked on stage!
