As fas as I know, every LCD Display is lit from the side. Since it is made from two glasplates with the actual Display inbetween, a lamp is put on one or two sides (since the AN1 Display is quite small, probably only one side). So I would guess, that that lamp is getting weak. Perhaps it can be changed. And of course, since it is a lamp, it will get weaker and it can die.
