Cool Edit Pro has some cool spectral analysis plug ins. I played a few AN1X patches to analyse them. Wow. I didn't realize an instrument could do that. The results resemble alien landscapes more than musical instrument sounds. A really wide range of frequencies.FM and osc sync seem to generate the weirdest patterns, but the filter shifts are pretty cool too.
