Which was, of course, my original problem.

I'd never tried dumping from a synth to a computer editor before I 
got the AN1x, so I had (or have) no idea what I was (am) talking 
about. Now it strikes me as logical that if you have an editor that 
can request data from a synth, then that's all you should have to do, 
i.e. request from the editor, not send from the synth, as it were. 
Because this didn't work at first, I was just trying anything, not 
knowing whether the fault was with me, the AN1x or the editor.

Anyway, like I say, it all seems to be working now, so I'm sorted.
