Re: USB - any good as a MIDI port interface?

2001-01-03 by jondl@jdlx-musique.com

I had very poor results using the MIDIMAN MIDIsport 2x2 with my
PowerMac and an ADS Tech USB PCI card.

SysEx data transfers are unreliable, or rather - unpredictable, in
nearly every app I tried - some apps worse then others. From what I've
gathered, this is not uncommon with the MIDIsport and USB equipped
Mac's. I was never able to get AN1xEdit to receive a SysEx dump from my
AN1x - transmitting to the AN1x from AN1xEdit worked. Gary G. was VERY
generous with his time and advice as I tried many possible combinations
of Apple USB drivers to work through the problem. I've had somewhat
better results with with an Opcode MIDIport 32 but still not as
reliable as a serial port MIDI Interface. I'm told by another AN1x user
on the list the Emgaic AMT works well with AN1xEdit. I'm still using my
good old serial port MIDI Interface and will continue to use it for as
long as practical.

I'd be very interested in hearing what results you achieve should you
purchase one of the newer MIDIMAN MIDI interfaces. The "USB Experience"
can be quite different for Mac vs. Win users.
