I don't agree that you need an expensive card for low latency....even the 
Creative AWE64 GOLD ($60) delivers no latency at all when playing soft synths 
live (giga, reality, Reaktor)
it is not so much the sound card but how your system is setup...you can get 
the best sound card out there but a poorly organized windows and hardware 
will deliver bad latency

i use AWEGOLD just for monitoring and midi recordiong of soft synths, and a 
high end RME Hammerfall card for actually recording and mixing. it works 
Killer!
