Re: [AN1x-list] OT: sampler or computer

2000-12-11 by Ralph

Hi Jake
I use an AKAI MPC2000XL which is a sampler, sequencer and drum machine all
rolled into one. I have it hooked up to my PC so I have the best off both
worlds. If I want to edit a sample I can do it in the Akai or take it to
the PC for big screen editing. I decided I wanted a hardware sampler but I
wanted something that would do minor sequencing for live work. The MPC
works wicked as any song I make in Cubase can be transfered reasonable easy
to it. Unfortunatly it is rather pricey compared to a new PC setup and Akai
are a bit tight with regards to the basic unit i.e. it has 2meg onboard and
only 1in 1out. Which is useless until you get more ram and the various
optional i/o cards which boosts the price quite considerably. Oh yeh did I
mention that you need storage for it aswell as there is no hd. So add to
that a scsi zip drive or similar and wait for it .....more cash which takes
this option to well over a grand. But as I first said it works very well
for me. My mate also has an mpc but mainly uses an Akai S2800 sampler which
is a hell of a lot cheaper and has some quality effects. It is only a
sampler mind but the S seris are industry standard and always have been
there's just something about the Akai sound!! You can pick up Akai samplers
second hand 2 a penny at around the 200 mark which I think is cheaper than
the software sampler Gigasampler, so its worth a look.
Hope this was of some use, also check last months postings there is quite a
lot of info on the A4000/5000 samplers.
Ralph
