Hi Jake, Do you want to use the sampler to play back vocal phrases and drum loops, or as a synth playing individual notes? For the former, a computer may prove easier to work with as it's visual although the filters in hardware samplers may prove better sounding. Editing samples on a 17" computer monitor beats a miniture LCD any day! If it's the latter, then a hardware sampler may prove to be more reliable. For live use: Well for a start, playing sampled notes from a computer via a MIDI keyboard often results in a slightly delayed reaction known as latency. Also streaming multiple audio channels from a computer in a live situation can be tempting fate a little too much due to a crash. You may find the best compromise is a sampler that uses a computer for editing and managing samples, that are then dumped back into the hardware sampler via SCSI for playback. Hope this helps. I look forward to hearing other people's thoughts. This post really isn't about my wonderful AN1X but it might have some impact on it. I am looking into getting a sampler and debating between getting an actual hardware sampler. Thinking of a esi 4000 or 2000, something along those lines. Or if I should just build a computer dedicated to audio. And use some sampling programs and also use it to sequence. I will most likely and hopefully be using this set up live and it will have the An1x, a akai ax73 and in time a drum pad system running in/out of it. I think a computer would be a more useful way to go but I really do like hardware better...easier to use, less crashes....more buttons... but also more money which I don't have. So if any of you have any suggestions...I am open for ideas.
