I'll answer my own question. I tried fm synthesis the other day, with nothing as fm source 1 and osc 2 as fm source 2. There was a change in timbre without touching the fm depth. FM master and slave can have interesting effects. Usually I can find an octave or so of notes which sound good. FM sounds good when osc 2 is set to either unison or various octaves above osc 1.
