using the free eg with assignable knobs

I have a bad knob on the AN1X. When I try to edit parameters, knob 5 wiggles on its own, changing parameters I don't want changed. I can work around this mostly by using the assignable knobs. How do I use the assignable knobs to write automation into the free eg?
